Rem short action needed

About to have my first bench rest built...in .308. Gunsmith has already ordered the barrel. Does anyone know where I can get a clean Rem short action in good condition? Thanks/ Chaz.....chazgreen@sbcglobal.net

The Stiller Predator is a much better choice if you are having to pay someone to true up the Rem rec.

You and 10,000 other people are looking for clean, used, cheap 700's. At the last show a guy had a 722 in 222 and a late J-lock 700 in 223, $325 ea. I came close to offering $250 for the 722 as the stock had been buggered up . I wish now I had offered $500 for the pair.

I just last month obtained an old style SA Remington 700 from WalMart. Price was $325 minus a $30 rebate and then I sold the stock and still have the trigger. By the time all is finished I wound up with a new action for only a little over a couple of hundred dollars. The action was a non J-lock and straight firing pin spring model in 243. I gave the barrel to my gunsmith as a gratuity. Even with the action truing and barrel crowning, chambering, threading and installation I wound up with the Kreiger barrel on a trued Remington 700 action about the same price as the Predator. That's how us poor folks have to build em. We'll see how the finished gun shoots.

Neither Brownells nor Midway carry the Rem action any longer; they say Rem will no longer supply them to anyone. I tried Wall Mart & they don't offer anthing less than $600; I checked both on line & at local stores. Maybe after the deer season is over..Custom actions are very, very nice, but I am retired like many of us, and on a budget so I will keep looking. Thanks/ Chaz

Id look at ot one of the lawton br actions aka 7500, tight br action and you can get them larger diam for increased stiffness.
