Rem, or Norma?

Hello folks, this is my first post.I would like a 6mmbr, i cant afford to build one, as the price of smithing in England is ridiculous.I have seen the cooper arms varminter, and really like the look of it, and its available in 6br. I,ve e mailed them, but got no reply, i wanted to know whether it is chambered for 6br rem, or 6br norma? also, can someone explain the difference to me? thanks in advance guys.

OK here go's il try and help you originaly remington made a design with a slightly shorter neck but then over 10 years ago they lengthened it to the standard we have now. There was a decision in 300 Metre shooting that they wanted a light recoiling round that was efficent in the wind they got a 6mmPPC and tried that with 105gr bullent and found it satisfactory but then they had problems with brass and the majority of target rifles had 308 size bolt faces so they looked at the 6mm BR case. When they did this they found the 6mmBR realy came alive with the 105 to 107gr match bullets and it is verry efficent at 600 yards and even satisfactory at 1000 yards. In Europe they require a different chamber designation for any changes in reamer design so the long throated 6mmBR Norma was designed for 8 twist barrels with more free bore to use the VLD type bullets. Also when you measure most US commercial brass you will find it under the chamber specifications to aid in extraction when debris enters the chamber while out hunting. this is not the best for accuracy so most people measured the brass and made tight fitting chambers. If you have a chamber for a remington case a Lapua or Norma case will not fit. the Lapua and Norma cases are slightly larger in the Head area i suspect the Cooper would be designed for Lapua cases but i am sure you could choose the twist rate with them to suit your shooting requirement. Hope this helps.

After almost 60 hits, i expected a bit more input, as this forum is dedicated to this calibre, it doesnt instill me with confidence about buying a gun in this calibre at all, heck, i might as well buy a .308. Bill, i thank you most kindly for taking the time and trouble to answer my post, all the best buddy.

I can think of one reason no one has answered your question, no one knows what reamer Cooper used to chamber their 6br rifles with. Virtually everyone who posts here has a custom chambered rifle, be it a Savage with a screw in barrel or a high dollar custom and thus would have no knowledge of what Cooper does.

I don't know the answer either unfortunately. While somewhat more expensive, perhaps you could ring them up keeping in mind the time differential between Jolly Old England and Montana.

Given the price for a Cooper rifle, which I imagine to be somewhat greater in England the price of smithing must be high indeed.

Yes, to buy a quality barrel, like a shilen, krieger, hart etc, or a border [scottish], and get a 2nd hand action, true it, and have the barrel fitted, is more than a brand new cooper! replacing barrels with custom quality ones is not done much here, apart from the br fella,s.

Hi Baldie
Speak to Brian Fox he is importing coopers in to the UK he might be able to find out for you.His telephone number is 0161 430 8278.I have just ordered a cooper phoenix in 22BR.

HI you say you might as well get a 308 i have both and the 6mmBR wins hands down the only thing a 308 is better for is energy for hunting. I used to use 308's for hunting i am now selling them all i have changed over to 7mm Remington Short magnum as it has better balistics and energy. the 308 is a cartrige that works that is all it is not superior to almost anything if it was not a military cartrige it would not be as widly used as it is. If you wish to use sompthing on a 308 case look at the 260 Rem as a seccond option if you cant get a 6mm BR Cooper. I think Cooper does custom work so you can also specify the twist rate so look at a 8 twist. What about the RPA custom rifles i think they make a Quadlite repeter and it would be available in 6mm BR with an 8 twist in a single shot or repeter in a choice of stocks. the Quadlite is a good action but i dont know what it costs there in the UK for either.

Good Luck

Thanks bill, i have 3 open slots on my ticket, a 6mm, a 6.5x55 and a 308, i want to try benchrest in the future, that was the idea of a br.The quadlite, once youve done with a barrel etc, is twice the price of a cooper, i cannot afford to build a decent gun of any calibre in england, the costs are just too high, it has to be an off the shelf gun.
