Rem Mod 700 VTR .223 Rem

Hey all! A golfing friend of mine just purchased a Rem Mod 700 VTR in .223 Rem and he wants me to sight it in for him. First of all, I'm honored that he thinks so highly of my shooting skills to do this for him :)! My question is, what do these rifles eat for production ammunition well? Dave doesn't reload, or shoot enough to reload, so factory production ammunition is what he will be shooting. He purchased a few boxes of Hornady Zmax 55gr. ammunition to sight it in with but, I gave the disclaimer that the rifle might not like the ammunition? With that being said, if this rifle doesn't eat this stuff well what would be the next choice???

Thanks,
Mike

I've had one for about three years now. The 55gr of any make only shot about one and a half inches at 100. I started feeding it 68gr Hornady hand loads and it puts three in the same hole now. BTW, the 75grainers opened the group. Also, you need to put it in another stock. The barrel is not floated in the original stock. There are tabs at the very end of the stock that the bbl sits on....not good. Good luck!!

Good looking out Snuggie! Not looking to get hounded or start a battle but, the lack of barrel floating in the Rem 700s is one of their shortcomings! Never quite understood why they don't float their barrels??

I agree man! That's why you gotta do some work on them. It really pays off in the long run. I put mine in a Hogue over mold stock..$85 I think. I also lightened the trigger to about 2.5 lbs. 8)

I asked Dave if this particular rig has an Xmark Pro trigger, having not seen it yet, and he said yes thankfully! I'm curious how light one can go with those particular triggers?

Also, if there are any other recommendations for factory ammo for this rifle please feel free to chime in!

Thanks,
Mike

I have used the blackhills loaded with the 50 grain vmax or whatever in my ar-15 and remmy VS with great luck.I went to one farm and killed so many chucks that I was sold for throw away ammo so to speak. When the grass is tall I dont waste fully prepped brass in a foot of hay or crabgrass as you will never find them.

Good call Jon! Dave may end up getting out and doing a little chucking with me so it'll work just fine!
