Rem barrel swap

What do I need to swap a barrel on a remington 700? I want to take a blued 22-250 barrel off and then put on another SS take-off 22-250 barrel. Any way to do it without buying $100+ in tools?
I saw something listed about using a small piece of rope wrapped around the barrel to break them free. I know I need to check the headspace after the swap. Thnaks, Rob.

 Rope?????? Rope won't do it. A factory barrel and action when assembled at the factory are screwed TIGHT, and then sometimes for good measure, some locktite is applied to the threads prior to tightening. Most of the time I can break them free with a Davidson action wrench and barrel vise, but sometimes a beefier setup is required.

I know you are talking about a "rope wrench" but tightneck is right, that won't even come close to loosening that barrel unless it is a custom job that is only "Benchrest" tight. Even if you are to get it off, the chances of a replacement fitting exactly are 50-50. In may case it always turns out to 95-5, and not in my favor. But I have a lathe so I can refit as needed.

But, you never know. So the only way to find out for sure is to take the barrel off and see. Some gunsmiths will take a barrel off for a few bucks while others may charge you as much as the barrel is worth.

good Luck

thanks for the input guys. Happy to ammuse you.
I have never been impressed by any of the 2 local gunsmiths and i called one a few weeks ago, they are not taking any business till march. Usually when they do they are very expensive and they are not br smiths. Anyways as alway day late dollar short, i just ordered from midway for a savage wrench and today i noticed they have barrel vises for about $50. So i will either order a vise down the road or try and make a vise out of alum or oak and steel. Thanks, rob.

Yup. Barrel vise and an action wrench. Some rifles are easier than others. Not a complicated job, but the right tools sure help. I stay on the good side of my gunsmith and help him every now and again. Last barrel change was for free! :)

Neither Tighneck nor I thought your question was amusing and we tried to give you an honest answer. You are certainly welcome to invest in a barrel vise and action wrench but I think you will find that there is much more to barrel swapping than having the tools. But good luck all the same.

This is the best reason I can think of that most barrels will need more than the old rope method to be able to remove them.
I just took this off a old XP-100 and even with the correct tools it needed a 4 foot cheater bar and a heat gun to remove it.

Ray is 100 percent correct! Factory barrels are not interchangable. They need to be properly fitted to the action in question. Unless you have the proper tools and the knowledge of how to do that fitting, you should turn the project over to someone who does.
