Last week I bought a pretty nice 722 in 222 Rem. from an on-line dealer, but after receiving it and thoroughly checking everything I find the trigger has major safety issues. It is very difficult to engage the safety with the bolt closed, and once engaged if I press down on the back of the bolt it jumps off safe. So I know it needs some kind of remedy before I use the rifle in the field.
I can return the rifle to Remington and have the trigger replaced, but that costs $20 plus shipping there and back, so it would probably wind up costing at least $60 total, which is almost half the cost of a Timney.
Does anyone know what kind of trigger Remington replaces them with? Is it a lawyer-proof one with a 5 pound (or worse) pull? I don’t think I’d want to blow $60 on that unless there was no other option.
I know Timney, and I think Jewel, make replacement triggers for the 722. Are there any others?
Would the trigger that’s currently on the rifle be worth sending to a qualified ‘smith for a trigger job? If so who is a good guy to send it to?
If possible I’d like to wind up with something with a pull weight in the 1.5lb range.
