I picked this up today and thought it was a tad odd that it had a nothc, is it normal or something else?

The first Rem 700's were cut like that as well as all or at least some of the 722's. Yours has the short bolt shroud also so I am assuming serial # is no more than 6 digits. These were made with the 2 screw holes on the side to attach apperature, peep) sites. If rifle was used in some competitions requiring fast loading an adapter screwed onto the 2 holes in rear bridge to aid in loading magazine via stripper clips. Early 40X repeaters had the slot machined into them to use the stripper clips also. All in line with an older Rem 700 and nothing wrong with it. Looks to have been refinsihed and bolt jewelled?? Nice older recievers that I like.

The early 700 actions with the magazine slot were discontinued in standard production around 1966. I believe that the 40X models built for across-the-course competition are still made with this feature.

These early actions are prized by some Tactical rifle enthusiasts who are interested in building M40 sniper rifle replicas. They command a premium price, much higher than a later action manufactured without the magazine slot.

thanks for answering my question, I picked it up for a new project, either 260AI or 243AI not sure which one though.

I figured it was older since it has a bigger safety head, and the safety that locks the bolt when its on. 6 digit Ser# btw

I have a 40X single that doesnt have this and being a magazine slot that explains why it doesnt have it.

The action in question is attached to a 270 VJ barrel I think its either a 223 necked up to 270 or 222 Rem mag necked up, not real sure.

You're probably already aware of this, but just in case you're not you should be advised that both the .243AI and the .260AI can give you problems feeding from the standard magazine, if a repeater is what you're after.

yeah ran into some problems like that with my 6.5x284, but plan on using the HS mag setup and will have to tweek the mags a bit I have an article saved that I found somewhere on this site about the feeding problems.

Sir
If you are building a 243 or 260AI and this is currently a 223 based cartridge you will need to redo boltface also. So between the expense of that and perhaps not using the HS setup you may be better off either keeping this for another project and/or buying an action with correct features from a 22-250, 243, etc. Unless you plan on a Sako type extractor and stuff anyway I am only trying to make the point on machineing/labor costs vs a few dollars more for a correct action. If you decide to sell that factory trigger with safety lever I would be interested for a project I have pending on an older reciever that I don't have the correct factory trigger for. Please keep me in mind. Thanks. dmmartin@sdplains.com

You can also get a replacement bolt from Dave Kiff of Pacific Precision Tool and Gage. You could make a switch barrel rifle.

I got the action cheap, like 2 bills cheap so even if I had to have it fit from a mag acton that would be ok. My smith charges $150 to open the bolt up and add the Sako extractor. So even then I am $350 into a really nice BDL acton. Sooo if anyone can point me in the drction of a good smith that can do the bolt mod cheaper please let me know.
I have looked at picking up another bolt on E-bay but after comparing ths bolt to my new ADL 243 bolt I will just have ths one done since its got some style at the handle, will take a pic of it when I get home.

Factory bolts have gone for over a hundred on ebay and I think that you will have a little over a hundred fifty in a Kiff bolt, which is available in what ever diameter that you request, an inexpensive way to get the bolt face that you need and tighten things up a bit. The bolts are currently being used by more than one action manufacturer.
