Rem 700 RAR question

Gonna need a video
Normal out of the box REM RR. They all do this. This is the issue he’s having. It’s normal and what you get :)

Can you make it better? Yes. Can you make it go away altogether? Yes. How much $$$ you got to throw into Rem 700? :)

You are seeing/hearing the bolt lugs transitioning from the cocking ramps over to the lug abutments. The surfaces at that transition on a new RR are sharp and coupled with the sharp edges on the bolt lugs causes an abrupt pop over. Some are worse than others. When I true and clean up a new 700 I hit the sharp edges of those surfaces with a die stone in the solvent tank. It’ll soften the transition. Older well used 700’s you can see that those surfaces have worn in. The other option as I stated before is to recut the cocking ramp deeper along with the pin and cocking piece mods to totally eliminate cock on close (and to keep ~.250” of pin fall).

Oh and to add: You can also clean up and polish the cocking piece detent which can help in the overall feel of the transition as well. If you shorten that area at all or too much you’ll add cock on close which might be detrimental to your cause.

Pull the firing pin assembly out and run just the naked bolt.
WSnyder was kind enough to post a video that is EXACTLY like what I'm seeing.
So, now I just have to decide what to do.

I appreciate everyone's patience. I like to understand the specific cause for problems. I know of no other way to learn new things. Some may consider it a waste of time and maybe that's true in their situation. I've never considered learning something new as time wasted. But that just applies to me and my situation.
Thanks for everyone's input. I appreciate it.

No worries at all. The only reason any of us learn how these things work is to do what you said, question and spend the time to understand and to figure it out.

So I've reached a decision. Since I'm ultimately interested in learning, I'm going to pursue this problem to it's possible bitter end.
No, it's not the quickest nor most economical way to go about it. This won't be the end of the problems. But I'll have knowledge.
So the next step will be removing the barrel.

Thanks again for everyone's perspectives. I appreciate it.

Before doing anything, I'd suggest measuring the cock on close, the firing pin travel and the pin protrussion. Write these down so you can refer to them later. Also take note of how much clearance there is between the cocking cam nose and the bottom of the cocking cam notch in the bolt body.

All of these will be affected once you start changing things. Lacking a trigger hanger, it's real easy to get stuff jacked up once you start tweakin'. Then you've a real mess on your hands to try and sort out. Keep in mind that everything changed....changes everything.

What you're seeing is normal 700 cocking traits. If the noise is what's bugging you, there's at least a half dozen more trails to explore before I'd start movin' metal.

Just sayin'.....

Good shootin' :) -Al

This will be a fun journey. Keep us in the loop as you move forward. When in doubt ask questions before you remove material. Good luck.
