Rem 700 project

Hey guys, I am finally ready to start my 243 build and have pretty much decided on what I want. To start I am going to use a Barreled Rem 700 action and add a Mcree stock, and an aftermarket trigger. I still havent decided on a scope so thats in the air, probably a Bushnell 4200.

Anyways, besides the aftermarket trigger, is there anything that needs or would be good to have done to the action? I plan on shooting the factory barrel until it either pisses me off or I burn it out, so I will be waiting to get it trued until I get an aftermarket barrel for it. I see some mods for the firing pin, do they help?

Be sure on a rem action to check the alignment of scope mounting holes in the top or the receiver to the bore. I just spent 550.oo bucks on a rem action and blueprinting only to find the holes over 40/1000 out of alignment this converts to about 22 MOA at 100 yards. Now I am waiting for a Bat action from Brunos and the rem is going in the garbage. I would look at stiller of similar action before I would spend any money to true a remington. just my two cents worth.

Dont get exercised on the scope mounting holes, Rem will replace such a screw-up at no cost, i have owned dozensof 700 with no such problem

the action is a good one, consider two things lap the locking lugs so they both mate with the action, then bed the recoil lug with epoxy extending 1-2 inch out under the chamber, free loat the bbl.

most 700;s will go <.500 in a good caliber like yours

Supposedly one of the features of the mcree stocks is the need to not bed the action to the stock, actually one of the resons I am choosing it over the Mcm I had originally wanted.

Thanks for the replies guys...

SAKO KID, I'll take that rem action off your hands. No need to throw it away ;D

Butch, the two lugs that lock thebolt make contact with the action on their rrear side, not towards the front of the gun,

these are parts that are manufactured to specification with some tolerances so it is not unusual to find the back sideof the lugs not making even contact and or the same contact.

if the contact is lopsided the bolt face will toraque awayfrom
the contact, not good for accuracy - so using a felt tip dry then coat the two lugs and operate the bold a number of time to see what is doing. if one polishes off and the other does not or if they polish off uneven, you have uneven recoil contact

the solution is to get a very mild abrasive compound, coat ther rearof the lugs and work the bolt until they make simular contact

Lapping the lugs is best done with the barrel removed. You will also need to check headspace after as well. In all reality, it's best done by a smith when the action is trued. You can do far more harm than good if it's done incorrectly. The best way to true lugs is to do so on a lathe, and then do a final lap with a lapping tool such as this:http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=781097

I suggest reading this series from Brownell's on building a Remington 700. It will take you through the necessary steps to produce a quality trued action. If nothing more you will better understand the process.

Before you consider the useless excersize of lapping lugs, do a search first. Better yet, cock your rifle and look at what the cocking piece does to the back of the bolt body. It lifts the back of the bolt up and moves your upper bolt lug away from the lug abuttment. It doesn't even touch until the gun goes bang.
I know you have read all about it in several places, but you can put it with the old wives tales.

Butch knows his stuff, and it would be good to take his advice. I have seen many accurate rifles that don't have lapped lugs, so it's not necessary.

If you want to squeeze the most accuracy from a rifle, it's best to start with a custom action rather than something mass produced with sloppy tolerances. But that is only one man's opinion. Once you do all the machining required to make a Remington action as true and tight as a custom, you have probably spent as much if not more than you would for a custom action anyway.

I personally despise Remington actions, and will probably never own one. The only Remington bolt gun I have ever owned was a 700 in 30-06 that I bought 10 years ago. I couldn't get it on target to save my life. That's when I found the front scope mounting holes were .060" off to the left of center! I am sorry, but that is just sh*t work. I promptly returned it and bought a Savage and have never looked back. If they ever decide to tighten up QC and their tolerances I may try another, but I seriously doubt it.

sleeve the bolt then lap the lugs . T.R.
P.S. if it costs as much to true an action that you already have as it does to buy a custom action than find another builder.

Hell, you could get a new bolt from PTG turned to your action dimentions and all tricked out for around $350

yes ptg does make a nice bolt but you could sleeve the bolt and true the action for far less than $ 350.00 .T.R.
