Rem 700 police problem ?

I have a Rem 700 Police in .223 as well my brother has same both guns develope a cratering -up around where primer is struck,
With factory loads, and more so when reloading with Varget I am 1.5 grs under max with 75gr Hornady HPBT Match bullets, I am afraid to go any higher as for the primer to rupture. I measured as best I could and hole on bolt face is .078" diameter my Rem 700 in 30.06 is .065" and my Rem model 7 about the same. has anyone noticed this with the Rem 700

I had two Rem Police. The second one, in .308win bought in 2006, has the same cratering as your rifle.

Doesnt matter if the load is at minimum or at maximum, theres is some cratering.

I found it really strange too...

Check the firing pin hole in bolt face might be over sized also you might consider replacing firing pin with high quality aftermarket part

My 700 VSF in .308 Craters Primers from the word go. My 243 PSS did it and my 22-250 VSSF did it too. I see a pattern emerging! All are loaded conservatively, the 22-250 did it with factory ammo.

Using 43.5gr of Viht 140 behind a 155 Scenar in the 308 and the crater is large with either CCI BR2's or federal 210M and they are only going 2730fps. They stay uniformly cratered and then as you get hot, you definately start to notice flattening at the edges so I dont worry about the cratering too much and watch the flattening, primer pockets and web dimension for growth and so far no problems.

Im 100% sure its just the big firing pin and hole as it seems to affect all remy's this side of the pond and we dont have warm weather either.

There was a tip about this recently, I think it was in the Daily Bulletin. It mentioned bushing the firing pin hole in the bolt face. Gre-Tan Rifles does this fix. Well worth having it done!
