Rem 700 One Piece Mount

Gentlmen,
I have just come into a Rem 700, built by Roy Dunlap for silhouette competition. I know, it's an oldy, but a very GOODY. The scope base currently is a one piece, 3 screw Redfield. Here are the questions: For hunting and/or casual bench work, would there be any benefit to upgrading to a one piece 4 screw base? If so, would steel or aluminum make a difference? Thanks for your help.

I think that you would get a more ridged scope mount with 4 screws but I don't think that it would make that big of a difference. As for steel or aluminum rings, aluminum will be liter that the steel rings and that is the only real difference. You may want to look at the rings and bases at Leupold.com Leupold has a wide selection of rings and bases to chose from. I like the STD mounts best I have never seen an STD fail.

Aren't all Redfield, Leupold, and Burris one piece windage bases
three screw models?

Al

alf,

most of them are, but Leupold offers 2 screw, 3 screw and 4 screw one piece bases depending on the model. However I am not familiar with the other manufacturers.

You're not old enough to see one fail. :) :)

The one piece mount is no stronger than any of the others, because:

1 - There is no stress in that area.

2 - No matter how strong the mount is,even if it's not needed), the limit of strength is the screws, and they are whimpy.

3 - If there is a "force" problem, I would rather the mount and screws fail, than the scope.
Scopes are many hundreds of dollars, mounts are lunch money.
