rem 700 magazine follower plate improvment?

I have a Rem 700 in 223 with regular hinged floor plate type magazine with the stamped magazine follower plate, that does not seem to want to move up and down nice and even or stay snug at the top when no cartridges are in it. When only one in the magazine it is uncooperative too.

What are options for replacing the follower and probably the spring that folks here have found to work well.

Not looking to replace the hinged floor plate magazine, at least not unless there are not other satisfactory fixes.

not positive but sounds like your mag box may be the problem..not the follower

Open the BDL floor plate.
Slide the lower spring leg aft to remove the follower & spring from the floorplate.
Slip the follower into the mag box to confirm smooth operation w/ no binding.

Bend/Splay the top & bottom mag spring legs from the pigeon toed configuration to a capitol W configuration.

Slide lower mag spring leg back into floorplate.
Insert follower into mag box & swing floorplate to latched position.

OEM followers are available in a forged or stamped sheet metal configuration.

If it is a chromed stamped steel follower,replace it as I have seen many that peel the chrome right off and they suck. Get a milled follower from brownells or maybe midway.

I had a magazine follow plate problem with an older Model Seven Rem. The spring at the bottom of the floor plate would move back and forth causing the follower to move around creating feeding problems. I solved the problem by inserting a plastic shim between the bottom of the spring and the rear end of the floor plate thus preventing the spring from moving to and fore.

Some of my more recent Rems have a factory installed metal stopper that serves the same purpose.
