Rem 700 in 22-250 convert to 308.. easy?

Hey all,

I'm looking at putting together a good bang for your $$ F Class rifle in 308 on a Rem 700

I've looked over the available models and the one that comes to the top of my list of wants/needs is the VL SS THUMBHOLE but it doesn't come in 308 but does come in 22-250. Considering I was planing to have a match barrel fitted straight up to whatever model I bought would it be as simple as just the barrel change? Would the bolt face be the same? And would the feed lips in the action be the same? Any other problems here?

My plan is ... A VL SS Thumbhole in 22-250, have the club gunsmith fit a long 308 Krieger Barrel (great price thru the rifle association) and have him pillar bed the action. I already have a VersaPod bipod and decent Leupold scope to get me started.

Any thoughts on this setup? I cant really afford to get a new stock straight up and figure the long match barrel would be money better spent to keep the 155grn'ers (Oz F Class std rules) supersonic at 1000yds

Sounds like you have a plan, I'll offer up a little insight as I've been a competitve shooter over 35 years and I've been down the same road before, what to start with, know the rules to the sport you are shooting in.

Bolt face will work as mentioned for a wide range of cases, the feed lips don't matter if it's only as F-
Class Rifle, Rules state it is SINGLE FEED ONLY, no need to spend big on fancy smancy bottom metal and removable clips.

The stock on the VL Thumhole is not the idea stock for F-Class F/TR, I've changed out a few of these and installed Bell & Carlson A-2, A-3 & A-4 stlyes as well as H. S. Precision PST-035's (weigh 2.2 lbs) for F/TR set ups. The Rifles weight including your bi pod can't be over 8.25 kg. (approx 18.15 lbs) so the strongest, lightest stock allows longer heavier barrels and more/big glass on top.

For a straight up F-Class F/TR set up I'd start with the following, er...I should say I did this past winter.

Used Rem. 700 action

Rifle Basix L-3 Target Trigger

Holland Recoil Lug

H. S. Precision PST-035 stock (used) with Choate Cheek piece (both med. & tall)

Broughton 32", 1-10", 5C barrel, 1.250-1.120 straight bull

Picitinny rail, 0 moa as my scope has built in 10 moa hold over

Hope some it ithis helps,

Thanks for the reply and I'm keen to hear advice from experienced shooters. I have already got a copy of the local rules that are slightly different im guessing.

True about the single feed but having a mag that wont feed wont sit well with me ;) .. I'm guessing it should be ok but wondered if any smiths here could say for sure either way.

What are the main problems with this stock for this type of shooting? I would replace it over time but for now I'm looking for something usable from the factory.. The other options are the Remington standard varminter stocks but I'm not sure they would be any better?

Local rules say 8kg without a front rest attached or 10kg with it attached.

A factory VL SS Thumbhole in 22-250, the heaviest Nightforce scope adds up to around 5.3kg (minus base & rings).... Even with a 32 inch barrel fitted I thought I might have to add weight to the factory stock.
