Rem 700 bulged barrel?

I bought a 700 Police in 223 for a very good price but I knew it was returned because it wouldn't group. The price was really right so I bought it not quite knowing what the problem was other then the barrel being full of copper!

After I took the action out of the stock got everything wiped down and got the barrel clean I could feel resistance at the end of the barrel pushing patches through. It happens in the last 2 inches of barrel the patch runs smooth the rest of the way but gets tough to push through at the end. I looked from the muzzle end of the barrel toward a light and I can see a black ring in the inside of the barrel that is there no matter where you shine light. I can't see or feel a bulge on the out side of the barrel, but I'm guessing the ring is because of a bulge. That would explain why the rifle wouldn't group.

Does this sound like a bulged barrel to you?? Or is it something else? Thanks for any help!

Return it to Remington, even though you weren't the original purchaser, if it's unmodified they will most likely replace it.

I once saw a Remington 760 in the 70's in 6mm Rem that had a rounded grove about 1/2" into the barrel. It was a circular ring in the bore that was parallel to the crown but probably .030" deep -weird.

The rifle shot fine before and after it was removed and recrowned about 3/4 for 5 at 100 yards.

I always wondered just how they did that ....
???

Talk to Remington .
See if they will let you chop off 2 " of that barrel or what it takes to clean up the problem.
Then it MIGHT shoot if everythjing else is o.k.

I'd be really tempted to just have a smith cut the offending two or three inches off and re-crown it...

Thanks for the help guys! The other thing I noticied is the action moves A LOT forward and backwards while it is in the stock without the action screws in. I had to wiggle the action back and forth the first time to get the action screws started!

I looked at the stock (H.S.) it didn't look like any extra material was taken out but it seems to have a lot more play then my other rifles! I suppose bedding should solve it....

I have an older 700 ALD in 264WM that has a barrel bulge near the muzzle. I posted some pictures which are below, a while back on a couple of forums. Most suggestions I got were that it had been fired with some mud or snow in the end of the barrel. Certainly don't recall that, but I guess anything is possible as it is a hunting gun. This ALD has a front sight and the bulge is coincidental with the sight. I also wonder if the Remington factory overheated the barrel when installing the sight.

In any case I can feel the bulge when cleaning it. The cleaning rod gets light for a 1/2" or so, and then gets tight again toward the end of the barrel. Note that in these photos the rifle twist kind of distorts the shape of the bulge. While it looks like the bulge (shadow) is twisted as well, it is not, and is just a ring about 2" back from the muzzle, and is also longer than it appears.

This gun used to shoot about 1.25" at 100 yards, but now has opened up to 3". It also has several hundred rounds through it, and I suspect the throat is burned, so not sure which issue is at play.

Does Remington hammer forge their barrels? Mine is a stainless steel barrel, and not sure SS is used for hammer forging.

have to agree w/RonAKA, a bbl bulge should be felt as looser, not tighter, with cleaning rod & patch. if bbl'd action is that loose in stock, bed it, and if that doesn't work, then modify bbl by shortening or recrowning. a nice star pattern should appear at muzzle from burnt powder. if not all flares are equal, should be recrowned. worked for me on at least 3 rifles and 1 revolver. surprising what the last thing the bullet hits exiting will do to it's flight path. good luck.
