Rem 700 Brass mangle

Have a Rem 700 that shoots 6BR.

My question is why isit that 1 out of 3 of my cases has a
"dig" at the extractor rim.

It is happening on the "cartidge"side of as opposed to
the "primer" side of the rim.

It looks like a little diviot .060 long, .010 wide, and .006 deep.

it almost appears like the extractor got a running start on the flange, and slammed into it, which is , of course, not possible.

To put another way, it resembles an AR15 cartridge when the semi-auto tries to extract before pressures drop. But yet that example is more of a bent rim, not a rim with a divot slapped into it.

I say slapped, only because the brass is displaced outward a good .007 from the original O.D. of the rim.

Anybody seen this ? I am wondering if this is a clue to my "hard extraction issues that have been plagueing my for a year.

The brass is new. The load is a mild, standard load. The chrono says nothing funny is going on. The primers are round, and the brass is not swollen.

Regards
Michael

If you have a stock extractor vs a sako style; I would look at the underside of the extractor for junk or a broken extractor altogether.

I have chronologically gifted eyesight and didn't know how bad a new Remington bolt face looked until I took closeup macro photos and then looked at them on the computer.

As you can see below Remington hired a Beaver to chew out the bolt face recess. BUT the closeup detail sure shows all its faults, and the extractor could be your brass chewing culprit, or possibly a bur on the ejector pin hole

I had a similar issue up to a couple of weeks ago. It came on slowly and I was finding it harder and harder to close the bolt on rounds. I wrote it off initially to the fact that I had only been neck sizing this batch of brass for numerous shooting cycles and it might be a bit "long". Then I shoulder bumped all the cases and the problem kept growing.

I removed the extractor, cleaned out all the gunk that had accumulated behind it, replaced it, and put a drop of oil behind it. No more issues.

Seen this problem on more than a few Remington's of recent vintage. Bolt difficult to close and the extractor carving up the rim of the case.

My gunsmith told me that it's the extractor - the permanant but expensive fix is to have a Sako style extractor installed. Replacing the orginal extractor with another Remington style extractor might work and is the less expensive option.
