rem. 700 bolt will not close ?

I had a problem with bolt not closing on some win. .243 brass, thought it was sizing problem, but on comparing it to others of a different batch the rims seem to be thicker. Question is could there be a problem with rifle? I tossed brass and solved the problem, but not sure that is the end of it or will se it again. Any ideas as what to do next? Thanks, John

Just to make sure we're on the same page, it appears you're describing Winchester .243 brass and not some other manufactures .243 Winchester brass. Is that correct?

Yes, it is win. factory brass, once fired. Two boxes hunting ammo bad ones, good ones are bulk bag once fired.

ARE U SURE U HAVE THE DIE SET RIGHT?? ARE U LUBING THE NECKS WITH A BRUSH?? IF NOT WHEN U PULL THE SIZING BALL UOT IS IT REAL STICKY? IF U DON'T LUBE THE NECKS REAL GOOD THE BRASS WILL GET STRETCHED OUT & GIVE U A FALSE READING

Was this brass once fired in your gun or in someone elses? If it was shot in a sloppy chamber or with hot loads you would have to use a small base die to bring it back to sammi specs and then it would probably fit.

Change your user name and it will solve the problem! ;D

Eric, that's a good one, but didn't work, lol ;D. I think I found problem, slight bulge at case-shoulder junction. New lee die set, I think that I had it set wrong, bullets were not seating hard. Still learning, have not had any issues with others will, check it next time. Thanks Guys, John

Well, the obvious first response would be whether or not the brass is trimmed to the proper length and is the brass full length re-sized with the proper die. I have no experience with brass having a "thicker base" but it that's a fact I'm wondering how it fits into the shell holder (is it a tight fit) or how deep it runs into the resizing die.

If the seating die is set to "taper crimp" you may be crimping before the bullet is fully seated and this will tend to "push " the shoulders out, adjust die up as needed.

I had maybe the same bulge many years ago when I started loading 300 ultra. Mine turned out to be a few of the cases were not chamfered and when I seated the bullets it caused that ring like you talked about. I noticed the bullets seated harder but thought nothing of it, resized and all was well.

If it's one and not another it's something in your loading/sizing steps. Crank your die down another half turn. If it's not brass have your headspace checked to rule out rifle

I think it is what is mentioned above ,,,your seater die is set tooo low and is trying to crimp the case mouth into the bullet ,,,,you shluld run it down untill it touches and then take it back up a lil ways to prevent this,,,,just my GUESS,,,Roger
