Rem 700 Bolt Handle Replacement

The cam face on my rem 700 PSS bolt is developing a burr and is hard to open at the top of the throw. I want to replace the bolt handle to get back the correct cam. What do you need to do to remove it? Is is silver soldered? Brazed? I can silver solder on the replacement if I can get the old one off. Attached is an image of the problem

Dan Armstrong at AccuTig welding can fix it right and faster than you can do t for yourself. Us Postal can get it to him in Fairbanks AK, and back to you in 5 days total.

about 30 seconds with a fine tooth file, some masking tape, and a steady hand will fix that minor problem. It will save you money at the sacrifice of a little bare metal. But you will also need to know why it is hitting there, if you didn't drop it or hit it with something. It looks like it is hitting the action maybe, I have 3 700 and none of them are developing that 'contact area'. If you don't fix the cause of the burr, than it will happen again.

The timing is off so that it has very little cam left to open the action. Removing metal will make it worse. I may end up sending to Dan but want to investigate doing myself first. I can't find any info on how Remington secured the handle to the bolt.

You might want to put a 1/2-13 screw in the rear of the bolt to act as a heat-sink before heating the bolt handle.
Positioning the new bolt handle is somewhat critical. It must be 'timed' such that the left side of the bolt handle is aligned with the bottom of the left lug. Fore and aft is important, also, as it determines the amount of extraction effort that is available.
It is a relatively simple task but you have to do everything correctly.

Take Rustystud's advice and send it to Dan Armstrong in Fairbanks, Alaska. I've sent him 8,9,10 over the last 3-4 years and you will be suprised at the fast turn around, his finished work is excellent, I don't use the Rem. handles anymore, get a Darrel Holland stainless replacement and you won't be disapointed!!,handle is a bit longer and bead blasted). Dan checks this site occasionally and is a regular advertiser on Benchrest Central, look in the services postings. He knows his stuff on timing these bolts. I think he charges about $25.00, not sure but he's reasonable. By the way he tig welds them on.

Send it to Dan, I had the same problem with a Rem 700 and he fixed it right up.

Call him first and he will tell you how to measure it to get the timing back when he replaces the bolt handle.

ace high,

You need to keep a spot of lube on that section, along with the back of the lugs and on the front nose of the cocking piece.

Thanks for the outstanding help! One of the best parts of this hobby, for me, is learning a new gunsmithing skill. I have built many rifles from parts kits, turned barrels, threaded muzzles, trigger jobs, tooling, etc. I have started reloading now too. I want to try to fix this bolt problem my self. But, if I screw it up, I will send it to Dan. I'm an engineer by trade. and a tinkerer by heart. My projects are always a lot of fun for me and usually turn out fine. I've been known to spend 2 hours on the lathe to make a $5 part. But, I made it. My friends send their problems to me now. I enjoy helping them out. Thanks again.

99% of all Rem handles are out of time.
The burr at the RH edge of the extraction cam is because the handle is not perpendicular with bolt centerline & is a witness mark to the only contact area of the drafted extraction cam surface.

There is an easier solution for removing handles, except a TIG'd handle)

Handle Removal:
Wrap 1/2 the bolt body diameter with calf kip, thin leather)to protect lugs/flutes/finish.
Put bolt in between padded bench vise jaws w/ handle facing up.
Tap on handle w/ 14oz dead blow hammer, alternating from fwd/aft end of knob.
A half dozen taps of the dead blow hammer, the silver brazed handle will jump off the bolt body.

Prep bolt/handle etc,etc.

How many times can you heat the bolt body/handle to 1400+ degrees, red hot)to facilitate manual cadmium silver brazing with out affecting heat treat???
ZERO TIMES!!!!!
