Rem 700 and the 338 Lapua

Hello all,

Is it possible to build a 338 Lapua Mag on a Remington 700 action? I am considering starting to gather parts for a project.

Thanks,

Matt

Yes, but you are pushing the limits of a Remington Action. You might want to look at the Stiller Tac338, and Kelblys and John Pierces actions specifically made for the 338 cartridges. The bolts and actions are built heavier in design.

The Remington manufactured 338 rifles have PT&G (manufactured) solid bolts in them and come from the custom shop. They do not have the two piece bolt bodies like come out of the regular remmy plant.

There is a u-tube video out on the web of a 338 Remington and the action flexes quite a bit during firing. I know they have been guilty of shearing scope base screws along with warping lugs.

You can do it, but the real question is should you do it. IMO, no.

Converting a 700 to Lapua requires the removal of a lot of metal from the bolt face, feed rails, and leaves very little barrel thickness at the chamber.

The RUMs based on the .404 Jeffries case is pretty much at what I'd consider the max for a 1.35" diameter 700 action. The larger Lapua case based on the .416 Rigby (strengthened web, thicker case) is really at the extreme limit. Which may be one reason why Weatherby went with that 9 lug boilt in their .378 based cases (also based on the .416 Rigby) to leave a little more meat in the receiver.

There is a reason that AW, Sako, Stiller, Surgeon, Lawton and all the rest went with a larger diameter receiver.

I figure using something like the big Stiller would only cost a couple hundred more, but would leave a much larger comfort factor.

warping lugs.... i call bs on that one i would like to see a pic of the lug i build them with kiff bolts and have seen them 40 improved on rem bolts loded hot not a problem yet
