Rem 700 ADL Long Action Project

Hello all, and first let me thank everyone for anything you can give on this!

Well, I have an older Rem 700 ADL in 30-06. It is definitely time to re barrel the thing. Problem is that I am not sure what to do with it. I am looking for something that will give me good performance out to 350 yards, max limit on my range!) And I want something that is going to be a fun range rifle, not to hard on the shoulder for extended sessions!)

I am leaning toward either the 6mmBR, 243 Win or 22-250 Rem, but am not sure:

1. Will the Long Action be a problem with using either cartridge?

2. Does any other cartridge make sense for a shooter living on a military paycheck with a family to feed?,I reload all my own ammo so factory fodder is not an issue.)

3. What projectiles would be the most efficient for decent accuracy at those ranges? ,Do you really need the heavy Berger VLD's or would lighter bullets give good accuracy at 300 yds?)

4. What barrels are going to give me some decent groups for fun shooting,do I need a $600 Shilen just to have some 1/2 MOA groups??)

I think you guys get the picture on my project. I am not trying to be stingy with this project, I just want a fun rifle that will shoot some nice groups that I can afford on my military pay.

Thanks again for the help!
Reggie

6.5X55 sweede or a 6.5-284 norma would work well with your long action.
You would probably have to modify your action to get a 6 br to feed without problems.

Do what i did i had a rem 721 action 06 and got me a new take off rem 700 stainless fluted 220 swift barrel my smith screwed it on and headspaced it flutes lined up nicely dropped in a single shot follower and set it down in a remington 700 mag LA bdl stock, opened up the barrel channel and refinished the stock and this turned out to be a sweet looking rifle, havent took it out to play any too cold and well the snow but cant wait, dont have alot in it and it will be easy on the shoulder

might be a way for you to go

I put a barrel chambered for 6x47 Lapua on a long 700 action about a year ago for a friend. This cartridge will give you performance equivalent to a std. 243 Win. but use less powder to do so. I've got two rifles myself chambered for the 6x47, and they're both very accurate with 105-115gr. bullets, out to 1000yds. Recoil is very tolerable. Only downside is that the Lapua brass is quite expensive - retail is over 70 cents per pop.

Shilen and Pac Nor both make threaded and short chambered barrels in a number of calibers for 700's. I know Pac Nor usually has a number of these barrels in stock. They work with a factory lug and are made to factory contours. All you would need then is to have a smith finish reaming and set headspace and you are good to go. You could pull this off for 450 bucks and you would be way ahead of the game. In my opinion you will be much happier spending the extra hundred dollars or so on a good barrel than trying to go with a lower quality barrel.

Boy, I'm sure surprised.. Oh well. Not the first time I've been the odd man out.. No biggy..

The correct answer though is....

Hands down, the 6BR.. The way I understand it you're wanting to shoot targets on your range that is from 0-300 yds long..

I also understand not being independently wealthy.. I would watch the for sale ads for a Remington barrel with under 500 or even 1000 rounds through it, if the price was right. 6BR..

A 14 twist would do well out to 300 yards, and do supreme at 100-200 with light flat based bullets.

So, 6BR 12-14 twist, chambered for Lapua brass,,most are)..

You will be amazed with the accuracy..
--------------------------------------------------------------

Now, with all that being said. Let me also throw in this..

Trade the Remington for a savage. That's easy enough to do. I traded my last Remington 700 for a savage right here on this site.. All I own in rifles is Savages now. We,savage shooters) change barrels, stocks, triggers, bolt heads, ect. right in your own home..

Either way the 6BR will amaze you..

Thank you all for the help!

I do have a few questions though:

1. 6mmBR in the long action, will it be able tobe modified to feed properly?

2. I currently have a factory standard barrel with a muzzlebrake on it. Would rebarreling it to 30-06 with a heavy contour / varmint contour be of any worth doing?

Thanks again for the help!!!
