Rem. 700 7 Mag. to .308 Win.

I have an older Remington 700 in 7mm Mag. How much trouble is it to change it over to .308 Win. I know a new barrel chambered in .308, but what about the bolt face? I know the Magnum case has a larger head diameter. Does the whole bolt have to be changed or just the extractor end? Will the long action be a problem if I feed one at a time. I would like to convert this rifle to shoot F/TR events.

You will have to get a whole new bolt.

It would be cheaper,and easier) to sell what you have and start with a 308 rifle or an action that has a 308,0.473") bolt face.

.

I have converted some bolt faces:
7.62x54R -> 45/70 [bigger]
8x57mm -> 300 Win Mag [bigger]
8x57mm -> .223 [smaller]
8x57mm -> 7.62x25mm [smaller]

In general, I would say to avoid the whole thing completely, but this is "Forums - Advanced Gunsmithing & Engineering ", so I should say, "Have at it.", but all I really want to say is "Avoid this project."

Once you get past the bolt face, there is the extractor, and then the feeding and then the ejection.

OR,
Purchase a L/A bolt of .700" diameter from PT&G or MidwayUSA-have the lugs ground as the lugs on a PT&G bolt are +.022" longer than a stock Rem bolt.
PT&G bolts have extractor & diameter options.

Have the bolt handle TIG welded instead of silver soldered onto the bolt body.
