Rem 5R Performance. Love my Custom's but don't get a lot better than this

I bought a Remmy 308 5R in 24", and sent back because I found snipercountrypx had the 20" threaded, and I had several Brakes I wanted to try out, and see how much vel I lost. Well to my surprise I lost 20fps, a big plus to have a stiffer barrel (to me) as well as weight in the hunt.
Read this after the fact www.tacticaloperations.com/SWATbarrel/

I didn't have my brass yet or my 168s and 175 SMK's so I picked up a box of Fed Match 168's to sight in a new Weaver Tactical 3-15x 50 30mm tube in FFP, moa/moa. Much to my surprise, and having the "get *** off BR syndrome" I shot a prone, rear homemade bag and front Harris bipod and after 2 sighters/ foulers this was my group.

I then started loading and 175's over 45g Varget @ 200yds prone shot these 2 groups, and this is less than 20rds down the tube.

And this is how she sits with the new Precision Armament M11 Brake, and the lil 20"er feels like my 243 shooting 58gr Vmax's

And here's a 5 shot group with a "called flyer"

Now to either sale my VSSFII in 22/250 and buy a Savage LRP in 260, or to use that action and have it trued up, and screw a Brux, Krieger/Bartlein/Rock on it and chamber for 260. We shot at 5/6 and 700 yds today, and those 260's were burning it up. Just to find a smith who can getter done before next spring with reasonable pricing. Any suggestions? I know GAP, and Bugholes are GTG, but that's about it. I wanna smith who isn't back logged too far, and will do a perfect job.

It's still blowin my mind. I've had a full custom 6mm, on a trued 700 with a Hart, a 6BR on a BAT with a Lilja, and for a few weeks a Panda Stolle, with a 29" Shilen in 30BR. Everyone was raving on these 5R's but none of my local FFL's could get one. I called Remington about the rumor saying these were blem barrels from the M24/M40 Military builds, and all they told me was it was a yearly 500 production, that was given to a few Co's. to sale. They make em in a 20" 308, 24", a 20" 223, 24", and a 300WM. The guy I talked to said they were not blems but barrels that were for the M24/M40's and just screwed on a SS 700 receiver. This is where I got mine, and Scott (the owner) had alot of info on them, and said he's yet to see one that won't shoot factory match ammo, sub moa.

I ordered the 24", but didn't like the cosmetics, and I knew I could get to 1k with a 20" (and it does) and then I stumbled on this article. Both good reads.

been looking on Rem web page and can not find any info on this rifle or other caliber version of it, where do you find the info.

Bob

Rem does not provide any info on it at all, and you won't find one at your local smith. Google snipercountrypx.com, or MileHighshooting. I think Bud's gun Shop had a cpl in stock, on the 2nd page for rem 700. BTW it's the only 308 with a 24" brrl, or 20", on a ss action, in the greenish HSP stock. Scott Powers is over snipercountrypx, and is great to deal with, with awesome customer service.

46 grains of varget with 175 smks ! What case and primers. Pretty warm sounds like it!

Nice shooting!

I am sorry. THIS IS A TYPO! Don't run this load. I run 45gr with 175's and 46 with 168's. It's highest load for each, but I started at 42gr, and found a node at 44gr, and even shot better with 45. I am using WIN cases, which have a tad more case cap than Lapua, or anything else I've tried. I shot the same load with Fed brass, and was getting slightly cratered primers, but with WIN cases, no pressure signs at all. No sticky bolt, or loose primer pockets yet. But it's a gun, and what shoots best I'm gonna run it. 308 has a pretty high barrel life anyway, and I'm gonna shoot what shoots the best. Thanks BTW, and sorry for the typo, I will fix that.

I remember in the 90's that I was told the then new VS models came out and they are hs precision stocked, with standard rifling. So I had to buy one,I took it out and shot a hole at 50 yds sighting in and went to 100 yds and shot a .300 broup and a co-worker hooked on sako's.He told me that after 100 rounds it wouldnt shoot under an inc.Well as always,he was wrong, and 17 years later after a couple thousnad rounds it still shoots 1/2 inch or better if I do my part.I wish mine had a 5r barrel as I have one in 6br and it shoots quite well.

The Remington 700 R5 MilSpec SS is not a catalog gun it is only sold by maybe one or 2 vendors Accusport is one of them were I got mine 4 or so years ago, I think they shoot well, normal 1/2 moa from 100 to 600 is what mine will shoot. I was going to sell it recently then decided to make it a two gun, so I ordered a Shilen 6.5x47L and a Mc Millan Edge stock and a Jewell trigger, did not have to do much to true it up, havent shot the 6.5 yet maybe tomorrow but now by just changing barrel and stock I have two totally different guns, mine is identical to the picture in here that is a HS prcision Stock but mine is 24 inch 308.

groundhog buster

I just sold a savage lrp 260 to a buddy of mine, it was a good shooter, i was shooting .7 at 200 yards 5 shot groups but it took a bunch of testing to get it that way, my final was lapua scenar 108 or the 123 with N-150 and that was out of the box, I only bought it to prove a point that you can take any good gun and if you spend time with it finding the right load they all shoot good if you can shoot, I took it to a 200 yard Factory Varmit for score match and won by 1 x point proved, and sold it.

Amen, I 100% believe that. I know alot of guys, get a factory gun, it doesn't shoot the way they like and they order a GAP or have a Custom build, to find that they can't do any better with the Custom. It sure as heck isn't GAP's fault as they build one heck of a gun, it's 95% of the time the man behind the stick. I have always been told, "don't upgrade until "you" can out shoot the gun" . Nothing makes you a better shooter than "shooting" You can read, learn internal/external ballistics, watch every Precision Rifle DVD made, and you will still be a better shooter if you put rounds down range. When I was shooting BR, I could make 1 ragged hole out to 300yds, and that's all I did, until I went groundhog hunting, ranged my first target (97) yds. lol," Wow is this gonna be easy" them boom, and I watched it run off. What the Heck? Same thing with a whitetail a few years later shooting prone as well, good 8pt, 6mm Rem with 80gr BT's @ 300yds. I had the dope right there on my stock, set my scope shot, and vapor trail was dead on, but the bullet fell about 4"s below the belly. WT*? was goin on. Turned out I was a decent BR shooter, but a sucky hunter, at least shooting prone. I started shooting prone, and my groups were bad to say the least, it was set for BR. I put an adj cheek rest, and started shooting 3-500rd per week of 22LR with a 4x mildot cheapo scope. A darn good way to learn to read wind is shooting rimfires at 200 yds. After that I could hit about anything (whitetail sized) out to 7/800yds. Always make sure the gun is set for "YOU" I am no expert by any means, and after 36 yrs(31 of them shooting) I'm still learning, and believe anyone getting into LR shooting, should start with a decent gun (Rem, Sav, Tikka etc.) good glass, that tracks well, and spend time on the fundamentals, (breathing, body position, reading wind) which I still suck at. After you can out shoot the gun, upgrade. But the moral is, just about any of these guns out of the box, in a good stock will shoot .5" groups, with the right load. Every gun shoots differently. My bud's 5R shoots best with 43.5gr of Varget, same as mine. BTW I would love to have a Savage in 260. That round is smoking everything at all the LR matches, and I want one bad! But if you don't handload the 308 is a good pick, because they all seem to shoot the Fed Gold match 168SMK's very well. Great thread guys, and I have some great pet loads for 223, 243, 308, 22-250, from doing OCW testing, and if you need some info just PM me. My Bro-in Law was just about to sale his 308, because it was shooting 1.5" groups and he thought the barrel was gone, and after a good cleaning, and load dev. it's in the .7" range now. That's why I like 308. FTR class, and a 3500, 4000 round barrel life.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE, GOD BLESS YOU ALL!
