Rem 580 project

Just got a 580, shipped from Alaska--turns out to have a walnut(coarse grain) stock. Plan on eventually working this into a BR. Duh, just read the rules on sporters, needs a mag. Well, I can mill a slot in the receiver, and cob in something since I'll do the stock myself. Anybody recommend a barrel? Would have to be reverse contour, and lapped after contouring. Would thread the receiver myself, and TIG on a Canjar ss trigger that I got (broken) in a junk box. Any ideas?

Aha, a look at the fine print in ARA rules, no magazine needed, now. But it says no mechanically assisted trigger. Does that mean a set trigger? Anybody know? Got the factory trigger to a nice 2 1/2 lbs, with a weaker spring, and a polish on the trigger/sear. Who makes these barrels?? Factory barrel looks pitted through the Hawkeye, but will test after slugging and trimming to tightest spot anyway.

Heloo--Anybody got info on these reverse taper barrels?? Might not need one, changed the pivot pin location on the factory trigger, now a crisp 1 lb, and a test target when the trigger was 2 1/2 lbs after I slugged and trimmed the barrel was a one hole (.38 cal hole) at 25 yds in the back yard off one bag. Mikey likes it! Snowing now....

IR 50 50 i believe the mag is required Not so as posted for ARA, You my friend are about to waste alot of time and money, that action is not up to par to shoot any competition, seen many try, all either quit or spent more money for better stuff. Look around before you waste your time and money.

Id trade the 580 for a 581 before I wasted the time and money cutting slot and buying magazine parts. Ive got one if youre interested.

Waste time? I'm semi-retired(3 day/week consultant), and Numrich Gun Parts is 5 miles from my house. Got two lathes, and a China mini mill, that's great for drilling and tapping, backyard bench is good to 45 yds. Having a wonderful time. Fired a 2350 once with my CMP M52, that I did a 5 oz Kenyon style trigger job on. I just worry about the cost of the Eley black box I used for that 2350 score. Came in second in the 3 target match by 5 points.

Since you have some machine tools, it's not a major project to drill & tap for set screws. The trigger can be converted to 3-way adjustable. I've done it on a 788 trigger which is almost identical to a 580 trigger and did the whole job by eyeball. the results won't make it match grade but it'll sweeten up quite a bit.

I put in a 6/32 overtravel screw, and moved the trigger pivot point about 1/4" up and back. Drilled a 1/8" hole with a solid carbide drill thru everything, while the trigger was engaged, then knocked out the original pin, and put in the end of a 1/8" drill bit for the new pivot. This increased the mechanical advantage for the finger end. Sort of a Kenyon conversion, like he used to do with the M52 trigger. Then I put in a weaker spring. Now I have a clean 1 lb pull with minimal overtravel!! Passed the bump test...looove it! Not as nice as the 5 oz pull on my converted M52, tho.

I've been thinking about trying that. Would you say the new hole was drilled 45 degrees up and back from the original?

Yes, it's directly under the sear contact point at the top of the trigger, and just touches the safety side arm bottom when safety is off. The drilling is touchy, because of the hard steel of the trigger, and the soft aluminum of the housing. I used my mini mill, so no wiggling to break the solid carbide drill bit. Gentle feed, medium speed. Drill while trigger is forced engaged. Love that adrenaline rush...less of a worry than when I drilled my M52 trigger! PS: The new pin must be shorter than the housing width, and you can stake the housing with two pin punch hits, so the pin will never walk out and impede the safety lever.

When I clamped the trigger ass'y in the drill press vise, I jammed the back of the trigger against the side of the vise. Wood block under the trigger. As best as I remember, anyway. Could wedge it with a toothpick from top or bottom, maybe?

Good news/bad news: Tried my Rem 580 at 50 yds with a 5-10 mph breeze on Sunday. One 5 shot group measured 3/8"--bad news : It was with Lapua Center X, and I have exactly 5 rounds of that left--none available. Wolf was promising, was strung L-R, might be the wind. I also had to use my rear Gator bag as the front, because of the up angle these local yahoos built the benches at my friend's range. Really chilly!! Fast test!
