Reloading manuals come up short for .223 V-Max 50gr w/CFE223

I have checked all the reloading manuals for this combination;

(I have these on hand):
Hornady V-Max 50 gr (#22616)
Hodgdon CFE 223 Powder

Loading data available
Hodgdon shows for a 50gr SPR SP (not the V-Max)
Col. 2.210"
CFE 223 = 27.0 - 28.5 Gr
Hornady shows for the 50 Gr V-Max:
Col. 2.240"
CFE 223 = none shown
Closest burn rate powder W748 (a little faster) 24.5 - 27.5
Closest burn rate powder H380 (a little slower) 25.3 - 28.1

I could use first, someone that has loaded this combination or second a recommended starting load range.
Since the Hornady manual shows a Col. of 2.240" I thought I should start there.
For a powder load I don't know a range to safely start.

in my tikka: 50g v max at 27.5 @ 2.250, Lapua brass, 0.20 off lands
CPR-18 (AR): 50g v max at 28.g @ 2.260, Fiochhi brass

as always, start a little lower, this are MY accurate reloads, YMMV

Hope this helps

do you know what coal you are loading?

thanks

It MIGHT be that this is Hodgdon's way of saying "Don't use CFE with your bullet."

I have seen in some manuals with load data, hard copy or on line for loads, that some powders are conspicuously missing from the list for, let's say, .223 80 gr Berger Target bullets.

OP- remember, the CFE is a relatively new powder and is not in all manuals. Did you go to the Hodgdon site and enter the info and see if they come up with a recipe.

Noslers has data using a 50gr ballistic tip and CFE223. Check their site; I'd wager it's closest to the Vmax.

The 53 gr V-Max has a lot better B.C. and is capable of shooting well out to 750 yds. I prefer a faster powder, IMR3031 and CCI400 near max load for best accuracy out of a 26 in, 9 twist, varmint contour Savage barrel.

Exactly why I use QuickLoad. The Nosler load data would be a good starting point: https://load-data.nosler.com/load-data/223-remington/

I find that Nosler water capacity is always conservative when I compare it to my recorded water capacity, so I find their data conservative.

I really hadn't used CFE 223, even though I had some. I picked up a used Cooper 223 AI, and when I asked the previous owner what load worked best for him, it was CFE 223 and 40 gr. bullets. A combination I never would have picked. But it worked for him, and it works for me. Since then I have come to use a lot of CFE 223 with great results. Shot over 8 lbs. of it on PD's last year in 223.
