Reloading in New York City prohibited

  • Thread starter Thread starter TC

So i've just read the NYC fire code and reloading is a strict no no in NYC and the 5 boroughs and you can only have 200 rounds (in total, not per calibre) in your home at any one time.

Anyone think I've got this wrong or suggestions to make the most of an awful situation (no i can't move out).

Frankly, coming from someone who still owns an apartment in NYC, and who lived there full time about 12 years, I would practice my own form of "civil disobedience" in the privacy of my own home. You would not be able to share the knowledge of what you were doing with anyone, because most NYC folks would look at you as if you were the next "ticking time bomb", and if discovered, would make the front page of the NY Times. Yes, you live close to others, but so do reloaders around the country living in apartments. Are you loading with black powder? I wouldn't want a load of that around, but we all know that smokeless powders are no major fire hazard using common sense storage. It is just the culture of the place that they are very "closed minded." They will tell you that they are the opposite, but that is what they are. Look who the Mayor is. Sorry for the rant but it "touched a nerve" when I read of your predicament. Good luck with practicing your civil rights in that place.

well, that sucks. not sure what the law actually says, but that seems kind of a stretch, can't believe they have laws like that at all. I know that the national fire code states you can only have so many pounds of powder in the open before storing in a wooden cabinet, etc. Maybe you need to challenge that law. get in touch with the NRA, they may be able to help you out, clarify things. You could always keep the components, then load at the range like benchrest folks do. there are several portable powder throwers and presses around. harrell, hood, neil jones, etc.

Being a fellow New York State resident (almost as far from the city as possible) and wishing I lived in a FREE State like Vermont (NFA friendly) I feel you burden as we are all held to some of the same Fire & Safety Codes through out the State.

Per my Districts Codes and Town Ordanance I can only have 5 lbs. of ANY Solid Propellant and 1,000 primer caps at any time......so take what Thorbird offered.....as.....good advice.

Fryeguy,
You think thouse laws suck....he'll never legally own a Handgun living where he's at, unless he's a LEO or really well conected, almost anywhere outside the City and parts of Long Island a pistol owners permit is permitted....yes I said owners permit, doesn't mean you can carry it anywhere, but you can own it.

yeah, a guy from my hometown was arrested driving thru N.J. now our hometown is a small farming town, and everyone has guns & hunts, etc. He was pulled over for speeding and police noticed a 22lr shell in floorboard. it happened to be a hollowpoint, and after searching the vehicle they found another pistol round that was a hollowpoint as well. took his ass to jail, even thou there wasn't a gun in vehicle at all. he ended up paying a fine and going on his way. B.S. if you ask me.

Wow, that is bad. Out here in Hawaii, we got many unfriendly gun politics, thankfully it's not that bad...yet? :P

Wow, I would still be in jail then. I have hundreds of rounds of hollowpoint in my truck at any one given time. We can buy and sell handguns here on the local internet classifieds (backpage) with no restrictions, no registration etc. I'll bet my son-in-law buys at least one a week.

The last time I bought primers I bought 50,000. I guess I better not move to NYC anytime soon. That really is too bad that it is come to that!

I live in Delaware County fulltime now, about 170 miles North of NYC, in one of the places that Sen. Schumer refers to as "like Montana" (which is an insult to a true free state like Montana) and I am fortunate enough to have a pistol permit because the local authorities are pro-gun. But it is rarity to find a county like this in NY State.

Sounds like Mexico, same deal except you can buy your way out pretty cheap.

Does anyone else think that admitting to a crime in print on a public forum is a bad idea? No one is that shielded ...

I live in Arizona, where a permit to carry is "not required" and suppressors are just another tool used to shoot with. I just don't understand the those who profess to work for the Constitution and spend most of there time, trying to change it to suit thier financial supporters. I am lucky, my job allowed me to move from Taxifornia and be rid of those with that mindset.

Below is the link to the NYC fire code for those who care to read it. I think it is very clear - reloading is prohibited and if you are caught you not only risk losing your permits but also prosecution. You can't even own powder in your own home in "any amount" so that makes it extremely difficult to reload at the range and as you know shipping loaded ammo to NYC isn't really possible either.

I went to Home Depot the other day and couldn't even buy a box cutter because i didn't have ID...unfortunately i am nearer 50 than 21 ! Amazing what it has come to but more amazing that the rules and regulations vary so wildly from state to state and change constantly, no wonder so many are falling foul of the law. Shame, real shame....

Basically it says:

3301.3.1 Explosives. It shall be unlawful to:
1. Manufacture any explosive, including small arms ammunition, primers, black powder and smokeless propellants.
4. Store, handle or use any explosive in a residential building, or within 100 feet (30 480 mm) thereof, except for approved blasting operations and lawful storage of small arms ammunition for personal use and not for resale in accordance with Section 3306.
5. Store, handle or use any explosive

3306.2.1 Occupancy restrictions. It shall be unlawful to store small arms ammunition and primers, black powder and smokeless propellants in any premises, building, structure or facility, except as authorized by this section.

Explosives. A permit is required to store, handle, use or sell explosives as follows:
1. Store, sell or offer for sale any amount of black powder and smokeless powder.
2. Store, sell or offer for sale any amount of blasting caps.
3. Store, sell or offer for sale 200 or more shells of small arms ammunition.

Man, looks like NYC is on my list of places never to visit.
If things get that bad around here, I'll have to pack up and leave.

If you look back in time, there was a time that New Yorkers walked or rode out to the outskirts of the city on Sunday afternoon for shooting matches. New York city's problems are 100 years in the making & needed someone to step in and stop the nonsense. That is what is so critical in 2012 that we remove individuals that have their own agenda from office before the cancer spreads.

God knows that we will try, like we always have, to remove them, but because of the uneducated, mind dead, brain washed masses in a North Eastern state, and a city like NYC, the chance is rock bottom. The media will attack anybody that stands for constitutional values as a nut job.

Thank GOD i live in Pennsylvania, for my own i purchased a Powder Storage box from Cabela's holds up too 50 LB of powder in one pound containers, have all my powder and primers in this container FIRE PROOF

watercam,
I don't think anyone has admitted to breaking the law? good advice thou. sorry for TC, that he can't do a normal hobby, and for all the NYC folks who can't walk out at night and feel safe since only criminals have the guns!

Amen to that.
Not only in NYC, but all over this beloved country!

I really have to wonder as soon as the idiot who is running this country, and not Hillary, when he is going to start working on gun ownership and reloading supplies???? Lets just say if I had the money I would live out in the sticks and would be heavily armed and property well posted. It does not matter what type of weapon it is, it can lay on that table for hundreds of years until some uninformed stupid no common sense idiot picks it up that bad things happen. Hell when I was 10 years old I had a big wooden stand-up with glass door gun case in my bedroom with pistols, rifles, shotguns, rimfire guns. No one ever got hurt and I had already taken my hunters safety class and passed with flying colors.
