reloading help on the 220 swift

Is the rifle you're shooting a sporter or "Varmint" type barrel and how long is your barrel??

I'm thinking that you'll be pretty well hemmed in to using 50gr bullets (or lower) for the distance and twist rate.

Usually 4064 was the go to powder for the first 2 swifts I had. And there are many published loads for it. The swift that I have now will not shoot 4064 with any consistencey..... so I've been using WW760 mostly. I have also had success with N550. I use either Norma or Winchester cases, Rem 9 1/2 primers with the WW760 and worked my way to or at the top of the manufacturers recommended powder charge. This gives me approx. 3997 fps with a 26" barrel. WD

The gun im shooting is a sako varmint l579 with a 26" varmint barrel. i was just curious what anyone thought about would get me there the flatest

Matt, with your rifle try Nosler 55 grain BT's and H414 with Fed 210 Match primers in Winchester brass. I have used this combo in 3 different rifles (two 14 twists, and one 12 twist) and it has always shined in both the velocity and accuracy department. As WD mentioned IMR 4064 is another very good powder for the Swift. 37 grains would be a good start for IMR 4064 with a 55 slug. Work up carefully! The Swift is still a hyper intensity cartridge and i will not divulge my load with H-414 as I am over 4,000 fps with my current Swift. Look in your load manuals for a starting point with H-414.

Can't remember the gr of H4895 but I worked up a load for a friend using 50gr Blitz Kings @ 3925fps with an es of 9fps on 5 shots with a .250 group @100yds. Works great on pds and coyotes. It is built on a Mauser with a 1:14 Lilja. Hope this helps.

52 Sierras are my choice of bullet (or the hornady's) in my swift. Absolutely love them I'm using R17, 40 grains I believe and its not hot at all. Shooting 3650 with a 24" barrel. I know I can get it faster and will be trying that out soon ;D

55 grain Bergers are a very flat shooting bullet out of the swift. 38.5gr of 4064! You should be able to get around 3800 with a 26" barrel.

Matt keep in mind that H414 that Frank is using, and the ww760 that I'm using is basicly one in the same powder. So there is a trend there IMHO. Good luck and let us know how it turns out. WD

The only load that I worked up for the Swift was with 52 and 53 gr. Sierra match bullets and H-380 powder. So far they have shot very good in the 2 rifles that have been shoot in. I ended up at max. book loads and the bullets seat to where they would just fit in the magizine. They were running around 3,900 fps.

Matt -
Howdy !

I shot a .224" calibre wildcat, w/ case capacity a tad less than a Swift. My rifle had a 24" SS HArt 5-groove 1-14.

I recommend you shoot WW760 ( H414 same stuff ).
VV160 might give you a tad more vel, you'd have to check for yer sef.
Use LR Mag primers, and be sure to try the FED LR Magnum Match primers.

For stock bullets ( 400yd varmint ).... if it's gotta be a 55; then in descending order:
- **** Hornady 55SX.... IF your gun can discharge them w/o blowing them up.
My rifle's field and accuracy load showed *3,690fps on the 55SX ( WW760 powder ).
NOTE: * that level of vel is WELL beyond the limit stated on the paper slip Hornady puts in each box of SX's.
Yes, I know... they're FB and not all THAT aero'. But.... w/ adequate vel... by the time they start to scrub-off KE; they'll already be where they're headed. I was able to get more vel from use of VV160 in my .224" cal wildcat, but... accuracy was not as good.

My furthest one-shot kill w/ a 55SX was @ 435yd, on a large NE Indiana " Soybeanus Digestus ".
3,900 + on a 55SX in lieu of stated limit of 3,200fps. makes it a whole 'nother ball game !
IMHO: For canned .224" cal death, the 55SX was unsurpassed by any other .224"cal bullets I tried ( and I tried all I could get my hands on ). MY rifle, My loads; other people's groundhog's.

- Hornady 55 "V"-Max
- Sierra 55 Blitz
- Nosler ( if you must ) 55BT

IF'n a fella was to spend a lot of time out in the 400-500yd corner of the envelope, my math shows something like a Sierra 65SPBT shot from a notional 1-12 gun would make a lot of sense. I got into the 500yd club ( w/ my .224" cal wildcat ) shooting prototype
55 "V"-Max from a 1-14. That 510 yd kill was @ the practical limits of KE readily attainable w/ a .224" cal 55. Steve Hornady warned me as much, when he sent me a handfull of the pre-production 55"V"-Max to try-out for my 500yd kill. NE Indiana' mutant groundhogs don't know they're supposed to die, and require some convincing !

As an aside:
When I up-gunned, I re-chambered for my wildcat again; this time w/ a 28" K & P SS 5-groove 1-8; and shot 75"A"-Max exclusively, for both paper and varmint. This combo gave me a zero - 1,000yd capable combo. Made a lot of sense for me, livin on the farm 6mi East of Sinclairs; where you can see soybeans, corn and wheat out to the curve of the horizon.

Best of luck in your endeavors !

With regards,
357Mag

Try some H380 and a 40gr Nosler BT with a CCI 200 primer, The swift i had would just bug hole with it. I think i was runing at the max load, Check the nolser book or the web site.

Thanks T 700

I shoot the heavies in .224 but the new 52 grain A-Max is supposed to have a very good BC and at that weight you should be able to get some real high velocities which equals flat shooting.
