Reloading 9mm and 223 on Dillon rl1100 help questions

I’m going to be loading 9 mm and 223 on a RL 1100. I have never loaded 9 mm ammo, I bought a ton of once fired processed brass mixed head stamp. Do I need to use one of my stations to resize it? If I have carbide dies, such as Lee or other brand, do I need to lube the 9 mm like I do my rifle rounds?

another question, thanks

Yes you have to resize\deprime the brass before you swage or prime. Typically on a 1050\1100 it's the first station after insertion to the shell plate.

Lots of people don't lube with carbide pistol dies, but I know more who do use lube. Try it without and with and see what you prefer.

Generally speaking,... you can run fired pistol caliber brass through a Dillon and end up with good ammunition. If you run it though a “processing” step first, it becomes easier. But every commercial loader I know and most experienced loaders will “process” their brass then run it through a second time to load it. If you process separately the usual setup is Decap, Swage, (skip priming), open, trim (RT1500)rifle then neck expand (required). For pistol the trim die is replaced with a carbide FL sizer with the decap pin removed. If you choose to start with fired brass, then the sequence is size & decap, swage, prime, powder thru expander, bullet feed, bulletin seat, then crimp.

You could do a lot worse than use Dillon Carbide dies. Only use carbide for pistol loading, otherwise lubing will drive you mad. I suggest cleaning, then use a good, not water based, spray lube on all the cases in a container ( not individual) - you dont need a lot, then size/deprime. It just makes life easier to lightly lube in bulk. I used a 550 for years for loading 32 and 38 for ISSF shooting with great results. A 550 with a powder measure will turn out a couple of hundred rounds real fast.
For 223 - well, its your call. I load for F-class on my 550, using it as a turret press. I dont use a powder measure, but use a Dillon powder die with a funnel etc. When I loaded for my AR, I used the powder measure and it was good enough to 200 yd matches and the like.

I have several 1050s and 1100s on my bench and I have been using them since the mid 90s.

The Dillon pistol resize dies are ok. However the radius on the bottom of the die is fairly large compared to others and you cant size the case down as far as you can with others. I use a Redding carbide 9mm die, and it sizes the brass down further than the Dillon. The Dillon crimp die is awesome. Remember you dont need much crimp, think of it as bell remover. I use Hornady One Shot lube on my pistol brass because it makes the press operate much smoother and easier.

For 223 I really like the Dillon Carbide FL resize die. You still have to use lube, but nowhere near as much and again the effort to operate the press is reduced. Spend some time polishing the bowl of the Dillon powder measure and even stick powders like Varget will drop within .2 of your target. I dont crimp 223 bullets.

If you decide to process 223 brass on your 1100, do not get the Dillon carbide trim die. It is more undersize than a small base die. I tried 2 of them with the same result. The carbide trim dies in 300 Whisper and 308 are awesome, but for some reason the 223 didnt work. Their steel 223 trim die works excellent.

Lastly, get the Starlight LED light system for your 1100, one for each toolhead. Reloading Innovations sell them. Absolutely worth it.

I'm running a 1050 Super (9mm, 40S&W, 45ACP and 38Special) with Dillon carbide dies. I don't lube, IMO a waste of time, start to finish in one run and I don't have any chambering problems.
