Reloading 44 mag for Henry

I posted here a while ago about reloading 44 mag for my Henry Big Boy. I found that the 300 grain XTP grouped much better than the 240. At 50 yards I was getting less than a 1” group for the 300s vs about a 2” plus for the 240s. The 300s were loaded with 18gr of H110, the 240s with 23gr of H4227. I wondered how the 300s would perform for deer hunting being lower velocity. All my shots are less than 100 yards. I found out. I got a doe at 70 yards. Shot was accurate, exited opposite shoulder, got both lungs. Only went about 30 yards. I think I like this load.

A 300-grain bullet, even at lower velocities, can pack a punch. I assume your Henry is either a 16.5" or 20" model. The following velocities and muzzle energies for the 18 grain H110 loads for each barrel length.

16.5" Barrel 1227 fps and 1003 ft-lbs energy.

20" Barrel 1274 fps and 1081 ft-lgs energy.

At 70 yards, the 20" barrel load still has approximately 866 ft-lb energy.
