Reloader 17 for 300WSM?

I've got a couple jugs of RE17 coming and want to try it in my 300WSM 1K lite gun and also perhaps in my 6.5 Shehane. I've been using 4831sc in both of these and want to compare with the new RE17. I found some test data for 6.5/284 but not for 300WSM.

I want to shoot a couple ladders but am not sure of what charge weight to start with in the WSM shooting 210VLD, 210M primers in Norma brass. I've been using 62.5 of the 4831sc. Could someone suggest starting point for my RE17 ladder? Thanks.....

It is supposed to be similar to 4350 burn rates; therefore, I would start with that data and work up from there. I am also waiting on some to try in my 300 and 7mm SAUMs.

At least in the cartridges I have loaded with it, 6.5Creedmoor, 308 and 300 Win Mag, I needed more R17 than H4350, Re15, etc. Running 49.0C grains in the 308 with a 168VLD,hot load, to say the least), and 69.0grs in the 300winmag with the 185vld,a light load). YMMV

I also thought there was some 300WSM load data already out there? Check the chart thats on the same page as German's data on the 6XC and 308

Thanks for the input. I think I'll start with 59gr with the 210's and work up. That should be safe enough. I'll post my results on the 300WSM load thread if I get anything worthwhile.

Had tried several different powders in my 300 RSAUM and the load I settled on was 59Gr's of N-540 behind a 165 Gr.Sierra Spbt. It gave me 3100+fps and .600 MOA. Just tried RL-17, a charge of 64Gr's behind the same Sierra bullet. Five, 3-shot groups, all shot after barrel was cold, like it would be in a hunting situation. Largest group, .504, smallest group. .132. The ES and sd for the five groups averaged out to ES-9, SD-3. I have nothing else that comes close to that. My 12 twist Hart barrel really likes this combo. Don't know if it will work as well in a WSM. I know the N-540 is a little to fast for the WSM. The one 300 WSM that I tested, preferred N-550 and N-160.

Chuck, where did you find an in stock distrubutor with RE 17 ? Please PM me if you will. I am wanting some for my 300wsm as well. I am currently running 72.5 grns of VV N560 under a 175 vld at 3150 fps with good results.
Thanks, Scout1

according to quickload a 59 grain charge of that stuff with the 210's is pushing 61582psi and it goes over there recomended pressure at 60grns. all this with only an 80% case fill. i personally would say its to fast for that case but i guess all you can do is try it and see

Nathan...

You know how it is. Gotta give the new powder a try.

I have used H4350 in the WSM before but have been getting better results with 4831sc. Could be RE17 will be somewhere in the middle and work well. I can only get around 2,825fps in my rifle accurately with 210's and 4831sc. It would be great to get closer to 3,000 with the high BC bullet. I only shoot it at 1K and every little bit of velocity helps. We'll see.

I had a chance to try some RE17 today in my 300WSM. I wasn't impressed.

My standard 1K load is 210JLK, 62.5 H4831sc, F210M in Norma brass. My Savage lite gun has a 28in 1-10 twist 3groove PacNor barrel with SAAMI chamber.

I shot a control group over the Chrony at 100 with my match load. Avg 2,743fps, ES9 SD2 group .432.

Then I shot a ten shot ladder at 100 with the RL17 in .5gr increments from 58.5 to 62.5. Velocity ranged from 2,790 at the low end to 2,947 at the high end. I got a very stiff bolt life and an extractor mark there so didn't go any higher. The spread of the 9 rounds wasn't really wide enough to give me any data as to a sweet spot.

I moved to 200 and shot another ladder the same way. Shots 4,5 and 6,60-61gr) were touching but the rest were widely spread. I had loaded five rounds with 61gr RL17,about 2,885fps)to shoot a group and did that. Got an unimpressive 1.764 all spread evenly. I immediately shot a 200yd 5 rnd group with my control load,4831sc) and got 4 in one hole at .459 and one called flyer about .25 out. This WSM barrel has always liked about 2,725 with the 210VLD's.

Not much of a test but I don't see any reason to burn up any more barrel in this gun with RL17. I will do some testing in my 6.5 Shehane on the off chance that it may work better there than the 4831sc I've been using but I doubt it. Extra velocity won't improve my match results if it's at the expense of accuracy.

All the rounds I shot today were exactly the same except for the powder. About 60 degrees and no wind at all.
