reloader 15 question

want to hear stories of reloader 15's temp sensitivity. can it be accounted for shooting different distances at different temps? wonder why military would pick this powder?

My experience (only) it was very consistent in temps 55-90 degrees however it did not perform well below 55 it is a dirty burning powder but very good in my 6br"s and brx.

I am using it in one of my .223's, the temp when the load was developed was around 75 degrees, shot it in a match a couple oof weeks ago and the yemp was just over 90 degres, could not see that there was any change.

First all powder in affected by temp. RL-15 Shoots small, Lot to lot is good. I don't find it overly dirty, good speed. I tried Varget,H4895 in the Dasher and nothing did better, ES and SD was very low all in single digits. I don't load far ahead so i can't tell what it is going act next winter but from 50 - 90 degrees i shoot one load and above 90 i cut back .2 it is very simple for me. The Dasher seems to thrive on it, even if it dirty temp. sensitive.............jim

wow. that's all good stories. whats going on with all the bad talk about rl-15. I got 5 pounds. well probably 4 now. thought I was going to have to switch. thanks for all the info. bad reputation is bogus then? thank god.

Since you posted the above . . . I use RL15 in several of my loads with no issues, but it is dirty!

I bought 5 #'s and liked it so much that I bought 3 more 5 #'ers. It is simply a great little powder for lots of cartridge's. Maybe a little dirty ,but it cleans up quick.

A lot of stuff you hear is exaggerated. In 22-250/22-250AI, for accuracy and speed nothing else even comes close.....temperatures to 100-105*, no problem. It's about the best for me in the 22BR also.

You wanna see dirty, burn some unique in a pistol and see what your soot pile looks like.I really dont think it burns any dirtier than any other powder such as h4895 etc etc etc .

Although Varget is my go-to powder, I've had excellent results in my .308 with RL15. I do back down the load some in 90+ temps. It is more sensitive to temperature than Varget

The service rifle guys (.223) swear by RL15. Shoot it and enjoy the good results.

The dirtyness is grossly overrated! If it works well, shoot and don't worry about it.

+ 10 and I think Alliant powders get a bum rap for being temp sensitive... Not anymore than any other brand... ;)

awesome. got another 3/4 inch group at 265 yards yesterday shooting from bi pod. thought first one was luck but I was wrong. I'm sticking it out with rl-15. still a little low on velocity. going to try to find next node up in up coming weeks. thanks for all the comments. shoot that powder in 6.5x47 lapua. in AR. and in my nephews 243. glad I don't have to find something else. it's 5:22am and I'm going hunting. ;D

I like the part were Varget is the go to powder. I had some here and it shot the lights out so it was about used up so i got an other jug different lot. I t would not shoot as good at the same speed. So i get an other one different lot, can't get to the same speed without hard bolt lift. It's my go to powder for fire forming.
RL-15 is not as sensitive as Varget is lot to lot.In 6 different barrels RL15 out shoots Varget and H4895 hands down.......jim

RL15 is a great Powder. Have used in my .223, 308, 6.5x47 all with excellent results. If temps get into 90's you may need to adjust loads if you are running on the upper edge.

Reloader 15 is what I am using, shot it today in 90 degree temps, the humidity I felt played a greater role in opening up the accuracy of the load, than the temp. The cases looked great, but I could see that the load was being affected on the target.
