Reforming brass for 6BR

I'm trying to get some info on reforming. I know nothing about it but have started looking on YouTube.

I have a 6Br that I have never fired. I inherited it when my brother passed away several years ago. Some of you will probably remember Shelley. He built it.

He talked about reforming but I was either only half listening or have forgotten all about it.

What tools do I need and what brass sizes down to 6BR? Is there anything else I need to know but don't know enough to ask?

Thanks in advance.

Dave

The brass starts as 6BR brass. When you fire the ammo the brass expands to the size of the chamber. We re-size the brass with a sizing die. The returns the case to the desired size for neck and body.

Jon, I already have some Lapua.

Terry, I'm not talking about resizing during the reloading process.

I'm asking about using one caliber and reforming to a different(smaller) caliber.

You could have the barrel set back and rechambered for the modern 6BR, no-neck-turn chamber and just use Lapua 6BR brass.

"I'm asking about using one caliber and reforming to a different (smaller) caliber".

And this makes the issue even more confusing. ???

My ignorance is really showing. I really am starting with no knowledge about how to do this. I believe he told me that he had reformed some 220 Russian to 6PPc. I don't even know the concepts but I'm sure that I can dig around enough to figure it out.

I started wondering just how this is done. And, I expect that I will try it.

I could just start loading. I know the twist is 1:14 and that I need to find the right bullet for that. That won't be much of a problem.

BTW, I am a temporary owner. When he was dying, he asked me to keep this gun. It was his first build. If either one of his Grandsons or mine gets interested in precision shooting, I am to give it to them. He's been gone 5 years and I haven't shot it. No idea what I will do if none of them get interested.

For those who don't know who I'm talking about Google Shelley Davidson Tinkertoy. He was quite innovative.

Dave, somewhere on the outside of the barrel near the chamber end, there will be some info stamped/engraved. Can you get this info to us (exactly) or shoot a picture and post here?

That would help us help you. First you say it is a 6mm BR but at the end you mention the 6mm PPC. These are two different cartridges. It is going to be either one or the other.

The barrel is a Shilen that he cut himself. The action was by either Jerry Stiller or Tom Titcomb. In other words a custom built 6BR rifle with a 1:14 twist barrel.

The reference to 6PPc was only an illustration of his telling me that he had reformed 220 Russian brass to 6PPC. He also built a 6PPC. I think he did that from a Jap 6.5 mm type 38 rifle.

All I'm really trying to find out is what caliber of brass is most suitable to reform down to 6BR. And, what methods and/or tools would be most appropriate to do that.

As others have said. You need to have the chamber cast to determine exactly what you have . We will be able to help you then. Not much anyone can do to help you at this point. Cast the chamber and get back to everyone
Then go from there

To get some preliminary info, you could cut the neck off a 6 BR case and see if it chambers. If it is too large in diameter, you know it isn't on the BR case. At that point, it's likely on the PPC case.

Dave,
I used to make and sell them in the old days. You shouldn't need any to shoot Shelley"s rifle. Let somebody check it out first before doing anything.
