Reform Brass for 280AI

Remington 700 with Lothar Walther 25" barrel will be out of the shop soon and need brass for Rem 280 AI. Has anyone had experience with fire forming Winchester Nickel plated Rem 280 to 280 AI. How about accuracy loads. Thanks

Get rid of the nickel plated as the coating embrittles the brass.Secondly with almost all ackley cartridges you can shoot standard 280 rem through it and you will have a perfect case upon extraction. Check with your smith and if he is unsure call sid goodling of goodling rifles or kevin rayhill of stockade stocks as he has built many ackleys over the years.

+1 on dump the nickle, it is more likely to "stick in the dies"

i have 2 700 in 280 ai and both were fireformed with 54gr 4350 and 140, with 9 1/2 in R/P brass

very clean no lost cases - trim, then work up loads, mine are best with 4350 and 4831 and 140 sierra sbt or Nosler bt - you should see 3150fps.

Thanks for the info guys. Will certainly stay away from nickel brass. Was concerned that nickel brass was not the way to go and you confirmed.

Does anyone have N160 or N165 load data for 280 AI?

I have had 0 problems with win. nickel brass in the 280AI. It seems to last longer than the soft Rem brass. 175SMK shoots good with 57gr H4831SC F210. 150SMK with63gr R22 F210. For big game, 150 Part 62gr R22 210m or Speer 160 Grand slam with 61 gr H4831SC 210m.
Good luck, Chris
