reduced size f-class target?

Found out a match this weekend will be shooting 300yrd reduced f-class target. I have some friends that are telling me the reduced size target is harder than the regular targets. I don't understand this. If the 10 is 1 moa at 300 or 600. It would seem that the 600 would be more dificult with the additional wind. Help me understand why 1 moa at 300 would be tougher than at 600??

It's all in their heads! When they look at the 300 yard target, it is smaller than the 600 yard target so they think it is a tougher target to shoot well on. You are correct in your thinking that the 600 yard course of fire has a lot more going on with the wind than 300 yards.

The 300 yd. Targets are not 1 moa, no NRA F-Class Taget is 1 moa and haven't been since 2007, they are in fact .5 moa, this is from the NRA Rule Book, Section 22, which can be found here:

4. TARGETS
NOTE: F-Class Target Centers are to be used with MR-63, MR-65, MR-1 and LR targets for all F-Class
shooting. When pasted onto the above mentioned targets the scoring will be conducted as follows: the new X-rings
are valued 10-X. The old X-ring becomes the new 10-ring, the old 10-ring becomes the new 9-ring, etc.
4.4 300 Yard Target -
NRA No. MR-63FC - F-Class Target Center based on the MR-63 target for use at 300 yards. To be pasted
over the MR-63 target.
Aiming Black (inches) Rings in white (inches)
X ring . . . . . . . . . . . . 1.42
10 ring . . . . . . . . . . . . 2.85
9 ring 5.85
8 ring 8.85
7 ring . . . . . . . . . . . 11.85
6 ring . . . . . . . . . . . 17.85
5 ring . . . . . . . . . . . . 23.85

We hold NRA Approved and Registered Tournaments at 300 yds. the hard way as we have no pits, try your hand at 15 rds. with no coaching and mirage so thick you couldn't cut it with a chainsaw.

sleepygator......any chance for reduced target at 200 yds?

the reason i ask is i have a 200 yd range 5 min from home.......easy to get too

i'd have to travel 30 min to get to a 300 yd range and 1 hour to the 600 yd range.

thanks
Ron

What we use at my club for 200 yard reduced F-class targets is the 100 yard small bore target TQ-4 http://pistoleer.com/targets/rifle It has a 1 inch X ring (1/2 MOA at 200 yards).

The bulls are reduced by 2/3. The X ring is .95" and the ten ring is 1.9". It is marked "MR63FC 5X (200 yard)" and does not correspond to any official target but should provide good practice. I hope you find it useful.

Since you seem *awfully* handy at this sort of thing... ;)

Any chance of getting a 100 and/or 200yd target with a single bull and a full set of scoring rings? Locally we've been talking about perhaps trying some rimfire F-Class, but need a target that is scaled correctly.

Thanks,

Monte

Monte,

I use 2-D CAD software to make the targets. It is fairly easy to do. I will put whatever will fit on letter (8½X11) size sheets and post it tomorrow. If you have access to a tabloid printer (11X17), let me know.

Once you start using all-black bulls, you quickly reach a point of diminishing returns. The toner cost starts to outweigh buying commercial targets.

Monte,

Attached is the 100 yard reduced MR-63FC. The 5-ring just fit on letter size paper. Please note that the scoring ring is black. The white rings are only demarcation. Hope your rimfire matches go well.

This is an exact 1/3 version of the MR-63FC. Usually, reduced-range targets are slightly smaller than a directly scaled version, taking into account less wind effect at shorter range. Since this is intended for rimfire, the 100 yard wind will present plenty of challenge. ;)

Many shooters at our local club find it harder to shoot at the 300y target because of the finer scoring rings. The 600 yard target has much thicker scoring rings and much easier to see when the mirage gets bad. There has been times when all you could see on the 300y target is a big black circle because of mirage! That makes for some interesting scores!
