Reduced recoil 450bm?

Has anybody messed around with the 450bm and reduced loads? Not subsonic just lighter recoil loads for plinking. Thinking maybe powder coated or plated cast bullets over trailboss maybe?

Your other alternative would be a nice chassis system, Even the weight of an MDT Oryx would have a noticeable reduction on felt recoil if you're using a factory wood or tupperware stock.
How much? We can use Gordon's reloading tool to give you some quick estimates.

230gr round with 36000 pressure with a 10lb rifle weight puts you at approx. 26 ft-lb of recoil.
Same load with a 20lb setup puts you at 13ft-lb.

Making faster follow up shots another bonus of the heavier stock.

Much of these discussions really should revolve around the platform you're using. As an example, it's difficult to make an AR lighter but you can add weight especially considering some of the newer models which allow for adding weight. Bolt actions rifles are wide open for modification.

Recoil can be mitigated by the weight of the rifle with standard loads certainly. You can also choose lighter bullets and different powder constraints.

The fit of the stock is an absolute deterrent to recoil. The best fitted stocks always help with how you and your body manage recoil.

Coated or plated bullets will help with action and barrel fouling. Fast burning powders such as TrailBoss or Lil'Gun work quite well under these circumstances.

Attempting to shoot from a bench will only aggravate the recoil.

Some of these lessons came at a high cost from recoil. I was shooting a Ruger #3 (:() using the oft suggested 405 gr. bullets (.45-70) and getting beaten to death when shooting LR prone. This was due to the crappy stock design. The fix was to sell the #3 and buy a #1, adjust the stock to fit me better and start out with the 300 gr. bullets.

The .450 Bushmaster didn't thrill me although it worked well enough in the AR15 platform. I did shoot some cast bullets over TrailBoss with great reduction in both velocity and recoil. So you're on the right track.

Enjoy!

:)

Oxymoron.......450BM/reduced recoil. Even more so because I cut group size by over 50% from factory loads by increasing velocity by over 200fps. After a steady 30 year diet of ppc and br based cartridges, it does get your attention.

I have a lot of fun with reduced loads in 450 Bushmaster! I have a CVA single shot. Trail Boss works fine but I've had better results with Unique and BE 86. I had poor accuracy with 255 coated pistol bullets, 2" groups at 50 yards. Plated 255's were good. Jacketed 230 pistol bullets like Hornady HAP are pretty accurate. 9-11grains of Unique or BE 86 gave 3/4- 1 1/2 at 50.

I know you said you weren't looking for anything subsonic but I'd like to emphasize that a 400+ gn bullet at 1050 fps is really fun and even more so with a suppressor attached! : ) Even my little guy (seven year old son) shoots it.

What platform are you running in 450 BM?

I figured the big pills subsonic would be fun but also figured they’d have a fair amount of recoil still.

Factory ammo is like 2200 fps. Hornady manual shows plenty of starting loads at 1700. That should be pretty significant difference. For the 240-250 gr stuff. Imr 4227 would been good for this. Ramshot enforcer too. They have the lowest listed max velocity loads, so the starter loads should still have good case fill

Lol, now it's time to laugh at myself. I bought a Mossberg Patriot because I did not want a brake. Lol, still laughing. Rifle was 2in at 100 and 4 to5 inch at 200, most of the time. Killed couple of big bucks, it worked good but continued to beat me up. Was not satisfied wnith the accuracy but had no desire to reload and get beat up shooting it. Called up the good folks at Harrells and added a brake. See, we can get smarter as we get older. Stumbled across an article by one of the designers of the cartridge. He claimed the ammo folks were way underloading it and gave some loading info. So I started adding powder. Wanted to shoot 250 FTX but could only find 225 FTX. When I got 200fps over factory velocity range groups dropped a lot. Now 1 in or better at 100, and 2 in at 200 yds. I am still not up to the loads shown in the article but I stopped when the group size dropped in half. Article says the case was designed for 60000 psi. Author claimed factory are loading at about 38000. For the price the Patriot has an acceptable trigger for deer, fits me, handles well, accuracy is acceptable for its purpose, nothing not to like. It does have recoil, especially at the bench working out loads in the summer.

I've read 2 different parent cartridges..........one being the 45 Professional, there isn't much info on this one. The other was the 284 Winchester.

Obviously the Winchester runs at much higher pressures than the 450 Bushmaster.

IF YOU RUN THE 450 BM AT THOSE HIGHER PRESSURES it is NOT to be used in an AR-15 rifle. Bolt actions can handle the higher pressures obviously. JUST STATING THIS FOR THOSE THAT DO NOT KNOW THIS.

I'm not sure actual 450 BM brass was actually designed for those higher pressures. IMO, If I were to run the 450 BM at those higher pressures, I would make my brass from 284 Winchester brass to be SURE it could handle those pressures.
