Redding Type S FL Die Question

Just purchased a new Redding type S full length sizing die.
In the instructions, it says to install the bushing and adjust the decapping rod all the way down until you feel it make contact with the bushing, then back the rod off 1/16 of a turn to give you .003-.004 clearance allowing the bushing to self center on your case neck.

If you want to only size part of the neck, back the decapping rod off two or three turns.

Are you better off sizing the entire neck, 25%, 50% or 75% of the neck? Does it really matter? My Wilson neck dies do not let you make the adjustment as to how much of the neck is resized.

Chuck,
On my 223 die I have the stem back off one half turn so I am re-sizing the last 28 or so thousandths of the neck. It works for me that way.

I size the whole thing...see absolutely no reason not to. If things are straight...they are straight the whole way down...

YMMV,
JB

If you are shooting flat base bullets you want to size to below where the base of the bullet is in the neck, otherwise it won't grip right and you will lose some accuracy.

My 2 cents: I also use S full length dies but only back the stem out 1/16 of a turn. I adjust the die body so that when sizing I only bump the shoulder of the case down .001. That way I get a decent amount of neck resizing and I don't work the shoulder too much; cases line up pretty straight in the chamber.

The full length Type S die is it not just a neck die? It does not bump the shoulder as well or does it? That is why the Type S match die set comes with a bump die to bump the shoulder back when required. Am I right or wrong here?

To have a die size the neck and bump the shoulder all in the same step is it not a custom made die to fit the size of ones chamber?

Clarify please?

Calvin,
The type S fl die is just like a regular fl die only it uses bushings to size the neck down from .001 to .003 smaller than your loaded round. It does not use an expander ball to open the neck up after it is sized down. It works the brass in the neck much less than a regular fl die..

There is still something missing here that has not been clarified for me.

The Type S FL neck dies that are in the competition or match sets only size the necks? Right or wrong?

If the shoulder requires bumping back it has to be done in a second step with the bump die. Correct?

I realize that they make a full length die that sizes the neck and bumps the shoulder but they are not bushing dies or are they?

Calvin

Calvin,
You can get a Redding die that will only size the neck with a bushing and not touch the body of the cartridge.

Or you can buy one that does the neck with a bushing and fl sizes the body of the cartridge.

Two separate dies.
