Redding LR1000

I've been reloading for about 5 years now. Started off with a Redding BR-30, added a Redding Pistol all checked with a Dillon DTerminator digital scale.

It took me a while to adjust to the BR30, but could throw IMR 4198 pretty consistently for my .223 AR and 25-45.

I recently bought the LR1000 for my 300NM and 300WM. I'm having trouble keeping the throws consistent and I'm using H1000. They'll vary up to .5 grains, possibly a little more.

I think my technique is the same as before.

Is there something I'm missing or doing wrong? Anything I can do to be more consistent?

Thanks for any feedback.

Throwing the same volume, or close to the same but a different mass, does not result in accurate charges by weight.

Get it so it throws under by a .5 grain and trickle the rest. I dont know of a measure that will throw h1000 and the like dead on everytime

Do you ‘knock’ at the top stroke and bottom stroke?

I have the same LR1000 and a 3BR and found both will meter to .1gr +/- if you knock at the bottom and the top with a smooth handle operation. The only time I get a discrepency is when the measure cuts a kernel, that powder dump and the following one are ALWAYS off by a .5gr or more.

Cheers.

I usually knock twice at the top stroke. I've tried a few different techniques actually and still can't pin it down.

Thanks for the feedback.

I've heard that elsewhere. Use a Chargemaster and trickle it up? But I don't think I can trickle with the Dillon scale.

Why trickle? The chargemaster will do everything you need it to do. Simplify. Some may lead you to believe you need lab grade precision all the time but thats just not the case 99% of the time

If you insist in throwing powder charge with measure, try throwing two half charges. As an example say you need 70 grains, throw 2 charges of 35 grains. Don't know if it will work, but definitely worth giving it a try. Good luck.:D:D

I've thought about that and have read it elsewhere. Thanks for the tip

Nothing to be done about throwing H1000 within a 10th. Granules too large and they are extruded which causes bridging.

As mentioned, I've thrown accurate IMR4198 with a BR30. It is extruded and long. Is there really that much of a difference? I know H1000 is a larger diameter, but would that really make that much of a difference?

I don't trust throwers, weigh all of mine,1000 rds handgun loads takes a lot longer but I know there right..

My neighbor who has been reloading for 40+ years is as meticulous as a BR shooter with EVERY round he loads. Says he has never had a misfire or other mishap. But he does use a thrower... a RCBS Rockchucker from the 70s.

H1000, it does make that much difference. That difference to me is totally unacceptable, even in large capacity cases, if precision is the intent. Everybody has different ideas with what works for them though. Hunting big game at point blank, well that might be an application where .5 grains deviation would be fine for a lighter load.

Yes, smaller grain extruded powders meter better. If I was volume varmint hunting inside of 300Y I might not care to weigh each charge personally. But for long range precision I care and I weigh to the granule.

For my AR with the intent of using ammo for the paper stages I use crappy old powders I've had for 20+ years. I use as light a load as will function the rifle and throw with the Dillon 550, the worst has been .4 grain, that's fine by me for this purpose.
