Redding FL bushing die Adjustment

This die must be defective. The problem is I have the die turned all the way down and placing positive pressure on the shellholder and the brass of my .223 is not even being sized to the neck-shoulder junction. it is lacking app. 1/16 of an inch or so. Needless to say the shoulders are not getting bumped back app. .003 to .004 which is what needs to happen for an auto. Has anyone had this problem with this type of die? Or, does anyone know why this is happening? Thanks in advance for your comments.
Bill

Hi,

The Redding neck bushings will not size all the way to the shoulder-neck junction. They are designed this way.

You say the shoulder is not bumped. Did you measure that or do you assume it?

Yes Sir,
I did measure the cases with the stoney point tool and I could not detect any movement at all of the shoulder of either of the ten pcs. of brass that I run thru the die and as I said above my die is putting positive pressure on the shellholder. I have never seen this before. Got any suggestions? Thanks for the reply. Bill

Sorry billmo, but it is my cold, hard and sometimes unpopular opinion that bushing dies are just not necessary for 223 and especially for an AR.
I use a common brand FL die and the same brand seater and get outstanding accuracy. Matching primer to powder to case to bullet will yeild more fun factor than sitting in front of your press fiddling with a die.

This die is a full length Redding bushing die. I almost went with a regular full length die. I think I'm going to send this one back and get a regular one. Thanks guys for the help. Bill

Hi Bill:

I have several sets of Redding bushing neck dies and they do not touch the shoulders at all. I've always been puzzled as to why they don't make the bushings to size the entire neck, but they do not. 1/16" may be a bit strong, if the bushing is all the way down it should leave about .020" of the base of the neck unsized.

A true shoulder bump neck die is usually a custom option,I paid $75 for mine) though I do think Hornady has a line of dies now that will bump the shoulders.

Good luck ...

I use regular full length dies for my AR's,Forster) and Redding bushing dies for my bolt guns. That would be my recommendation. If you're concerned with controlling neck diameter Forster will custom hone the neck on one of their dies to the size that you specify for about $10.

I understand that Forster is now manufacturing shoulder bump bushing dies, but I haven't tried one yet.

For those who wonder why the bushing dies don't size to the base of the neck--- think about how the dies are made. If they are to be held in place they need a place to set correct ????
The extra space prevents the bushing from sizing to the neck shoulder junction.....
Harrells FL bushing dies seem to size closer than any other I have....
