Redding "Dual Ring" Reloading Dies Discontinued

While doing my usual morning sweep through eBay looking for who knows what, gun parts, reloading dies, etc., I spotted some used Redding Competition .44 Special "Dual Ring" reloading dies priced to sell.

Like I usually do I wanted to compare to current prices to see if this really is a good deal, it is.

Except I see that Redding has discontinued their "Dual Ring" sizing dies.

I have Dillon dies but am considering an upgrade to Redding Pro-Series dies.

kenhwind,

Redding discontinued the Dual-Ring dies well over a year ago, maybe two years ago. They have a replacement die which uses a single piece of carbide to replace the two rings. Call them and they'll tell you the name of the new die, I don't remember.

No problems using the Dual-Ring dies. I bought several calibers when I found them on sale. They were running about $100/set rather than $145.

What was the implied benefit of the dual sizing rings over a standard single ring?
I assume from their older catalog that the idea was to not over resize the base of the brass. I did an internet search, and it seems that maybe it didn't work out so well, or probably just not worth the extra cost to manufacture.
I read some posts about reloads not chambering and or the upper ring coming loose, so I was curious about them.

I had a Redding dual ring die in 45acp and I sent it back to Redding along with some samples at their request due to the fact that my cases were coming out "coke bottle" shaped. After about a month, they finally sent me a new die only to find out that it too was producing the same effect. Never used the die again.

I tried dual ring dies in 45ACP and 40S&W. The base of a seated bullet was often just at the area where the case OD increased. This would allow for easier bullet set back in a semi auto. As we know, bullet set back in semi autos can ramp up pressure pretty quick.

The original idea with dual ring sizers was to work the brass less to extend its life. They may have prevented a few case splits. I think dual ring sizers were an answer to an unasked question.

I haven't bought the dies on eBay yet and neither has anyone else. Something is telling me that if I do, I might end up buying a separate sizing die.
