Redding Comp. Seater...Can I Do This???

Is it possible for me to change the seating stem in a Redding comp. seater die?????

Say from .224 to .204 stem????

Phil.

This can be done. I don't know if there are any restrictions with how big a jump you can make. I have a future project to convert my .223 to a 6X45 (necked up 223). I spoke with the techs at Redding and they said just order a 6mm stem, which I did and it fits my .223 seater. This will be a next winter project - haven't ordered the barrel or reamer yet.

All of the ones that I've paid attention to were caliber specific, with the hole for the seater stem being about .001" over caliber. This aids in bullet alignment. I've made seater dies for the Redding Comp die body with my chambering reamers. Redding will sell the sliding sleeve as an unreamed blank. It's not hardened. You just put the hole through it for the stem and ream it with the chambering reamer. You control the fit of the stem/bullet and the case to die. I prefer this to other seater dies. You can also make the sleeve yourself from a barrel stub.--Mike Ezell

Phil,
Simply put no you can't just interchange the seating stems themselves.

I tried going 22BR to 6BR and called Redding directly. They had me get in touch with Sinclair and the difference in price was $9 between changing everything out and buying a new die ready to go.

Lynn,
Are you saying if you were going to buy the sleeve and seating stem in say 6br the price of those two items were within $9 of the complete 6br dye?
Wayne.

Exactly!!
And it might have been less than that so I just bought a new seater.
I had lapped my seater stem a bit too much looking for better seating consistency and it cracked on me.I figured as long as I had Redding on the phone I would get the parts to convert my 22BR seater but not at those prices.
