Redding Carbide Button

I purchased a Redding carbide expander for my Redding 6.5x47 S die. The carbide expander did not come with instructions, so I simply removed the original expander and installed the carbide button with the decapping pin retainer that came in the kit.

It seems to work, but the carbide button can move along the axis of the decapping rod approximately 1/10". Is this as it should be, or should there have been a spacer or longer decapping pin retainer?

You got it correct. It is a "floating" button! This allows it to center itself up in the case neck when the case is being extracted from the die. You did exactly what you should have done.

Exactly.

Mine does the same thing. I have found using this with my competition sizing die produced more consistent velocities.
