Redding 2400 Micrometer Case Trimmer Problems

I've got a Redding 2400 trimmer and I've having a hard time getting consistent trim lengths. Sometimes as much as 5 or 6 thousandths difference and I've noticed that sometimes the handle gets hard to turn while other times it turns easy. The lock/set screw on the micro is tight so its not moving when it shouldn't and the cases seem to be seating in the collet like they should. Any ideas?

I used one of these for quite a while with good results before I got my Henderson Powered Case Trimmer. If it's working right, and if the case is seated tightly and properly in the collet, and if you've sized correctly and tightened the black twist nut on the micrometer, and if you're using the right pilot, and if all the cases you're trimming are longer than your selected trim length ... then all your cases will be within a thousandth or two at the most, and the feel on the spinning handle will be very consistent. I know ... I know ... that's a lot of "if's" ... and some of the reasons I invested in the Henderson Powered Case Trimmer. Is it possible some of your cases are shorter than your trim length that you've dialed into the 2400? That would explain the difference in length and "feel on the wheel".

Nope they were all longer then the length selected by about 5 thousandths. I have the right pilot, they're sized correctly, the black twist nut is tight and I do believe they were/are seated correctly in the collet. The tightness of the spindle when I crank it "sometimes" has me wondering why its doing this. Could it be the washer rubbing the frame where the spindle rides when it bottoms out?

Can't comment on that trimmer but if you ever decide to move on from it, I've gotten excellent and consistent results with the Sinclair trimmer using the carbide cutter.

However, a few years ago I purchase a Sinclair chamber length gauge for $6. Even with the safety margin Sinclair specifies, I've been able to reduce the amount of trimming needed to about 90%. In other words, I rarely need to trim anymore.

The reason is that most, but not all, rifles have a generous amount of lead in the throat. Using the gauge you can determine the amount in your rifle, apply the safety factor, and obtain the working chamber length for your rifle which most likely will allow you to reduce the amount of trimming necessary.

PS: Some claim that reducing the trimming (safely of course) also minimize the formation of a carbon ring. I don't know if this is true, but it sounds logical.
