I am in the process of building a 284 Winchester using a commercial mauser 98 action (30 06) with a Krieger 1-9 twist 26" barrel. I will be using Norma 284 Win brass and Hornady 162 gr ELD match bullets. The gunsmith has requested a dummy cartridge. What is recommended for the cartridge overall length?

By requesting a dummy cartridge he must be going to throat it where it belongs. If you load your bullet in a case and keep the pressure ring just in front of the neck shoulder junction, ( maybe 30 thousandths) it would be where I would want it. You don't want the bullet using up your powder capacity. You also don't want it way out where you can't chase the lands. Matt
