Recommended 5.56 Bolt Action Rifles with Magazine?

I had the pleasure of firing a Remington 700 PSS in .223, definitely a tack driver but I have a boat load of 5.56. I only wish it fired 5.56 as well. Please let me know if you can recommend something similar.

I decided I had to have a 223/5.56 bolt gun last fall. That cal is hard to find right now. But I did find one. It is a Thompson Center Venture II. Great shooter with my hand loads and cleans up nicely. For some reason this barrel just doesn't copper up much.

If you can find one, a Ruger Precision 5.56 is a solid choice. Shot several highmaster scores for midrange prone (sling), and actually shot a 196-6X with it off a cheap bipod in an F-class match with mine.

Ability to magazine feed 80 and 90 grainers is a big deal in a .223/5.56.

Great rifle, would have been even better with a 24 or 26" barrel.

The Ruger American and the Mossberg Predator are two that come to mind. I actually have looked at both at local gun shops before. Was considering buying one myself.

Don't forget to consider the twist of the barrel on whatever you buy. The rate you nded may eliminate some of the options listed here.

Before buying another rifle, I would pull one of the 5.56 bullets and use an OAL length comparator to determine if those 5.56 rounds are jamming the lands of your .223 rifle. They probably won't be. If the 5.56 rounds have at least .020-.030" before reaching the rifling, I would fire one or two to look for pressure signs. I have actually done this with some WW 5.56 white box 55gr in a Ruger Hawkeye and they worked fine, no pressure signs at all. Of course, I would use this as an excuse to buy another rifle.

Does the Howa mini action take detachable mags? That may be worth looking at.
I own CZ527's and one Howa Mini. Both are considered mini-actions (smaller than standard M700 action). You don't want the Howa Headache. If the magazines were Pmags or some other quality 3rd party mags then great, BUT they are not. There are endless threads about the issues plaguing the Howa, and the manufacturer doesn't care so customer service is same as shouting into Grand Canyon...

I had to (1) replace the trigger (Timney is now offer one $140), (2) replace the bottom metal with a internal blind magazine with hinged floor plate (2 gunsmiths are making variants of this aftermarket part $170) and then a new stock (B&C has kevlar stock and Boyd has laminated stocks or you can buy a chassis).

The CZ527 Varmint model (heavier barrel and kevlar stock) is worth buying and you don't need to upgrade anything... maybe a Mini Badger bolt knob.. You might also take a look at Tika.

I would recommend the Tikka T3X CTR with the adjustable cheek in what ever flavor you prefer, but their mags hold 10 rds.
Just my $.02 worth. But that and like $10 more will get you a large coffee at Strawbuck’s.
