Recoil Reducers

I've noticed questions on some recoil reducers in posts and this is what I use.

Recoil reducers:

http://www.nokick.com/Bump_Buster_Hydraulic_Recoil_System_w_Pad_Adj_STD_p/bb%20std-pa.htm

http://mpcsports.com/candhmercuryrecoilreducers.aspx

I have used both of the recoil reducers in prone, F-class and bench rest competitions and both do work! What they reduce is the sharp part of the recoil making the recoil into a more gentle push. I know of NO rules in international or USA that disallow their usage.
The mercury reducer add more weigh, 8 to 16 ounces. The hydraulic unit is about 6 inches long and may not fit in stocks that have adjustable cheek pieces.

I am a big fan of NO recoil!! I now have a recoild reducer in all guns except my 6DASHER. I use the Edwards MAX which is a mechanical product:
"Our newest product is called The MAX. A full 5 inches long, it is a nonadjustable unit intended for installation in synthetic stocks. The units 7/8" diameter sleeve is simply epoxied into the inside of the stock's comb, and the remainder of the cavity is filled with expandable foam to provide a secure, trouble-free installation."
And, the Graco mercury reducer:
Diameter - 9/16"
Weight - 8 ounces
Length - 5"
Contains Mercury - Yes
If you want to see bullet impact, these are great add-ons for a reasonable price.

Barry,

I've considered them from time to time, but have always chickened out because I'd be sweating bullets drilling a hole that big in a $700 fiberglass stock. Can you share a bit on the install process?

Danny

Danny;
I can't!! I too am a chicken so when it comes to installation I just ask my gunsmith to do the job and rely on his expertise. I am currently building a 7SAUM that will have a GRACO installed in the McMillan A-5 stock. Hopefully there will be no problems.
Barry

I've done it with a drill gauge/guide (like the one from Brownell's, shop made) and a drill press, just have it square to the world, go slow and kept my fingers crossed.

I also put 1 in a new Bell & Carlson w/adj. cheek & butt, it was a close fit and I had to cut 1/2" off the bottom of the cheek rods, there was still plenty of adj. left.

Yep, sometimes it's better to pay your gunsmith or stock maker to do the job. I've learned that the hard way more than once.

Danny

barry,

do one other thing. go to the http://www.berettausa.com/shop-by-department/gun-accessories/shotgun/recoil-pads/ and order yourself a GEL PAD [large] and and mount it on the graycoil. the mounting buttons are male/male. cut/grind off the male portion that would mount into stock - it will now mount 'flush' on graycoil. mount pad - has a quick detach system. pad is 'surbathane' - best for recoil.

i have used this system and fired a 30-06, semi-free recoil, using 210's moving at 2700+ fps. works like a champ.

habu :D

I am considering adding a mercury recoil reducer to my 7 Dakota. I have no prior experience with mercury reducers and am wondering what if any impact they have on accuracy. I would like to have the benefits of the reducer but am suspicious of the impacts that mercury sloshing around in a tube during recoil might have on accuracy. Does anyone have any insight?

1.158ms is the barrel time for the 125gr Balistic Tip out of my 30-338 Lapua. I am guessing the mercury has no affect on bullet accuracy. I'm also guessing the bullet is on it's mission when the mercury is sloshing around.
And yes, that thing really helps in my 30-338. And the gun is very accurate!!

As I have stated previously,,, "I hate recoil"..
On my 30-338 (top gun in pic)I have a Pachmayer recoil pad, a Graco mercury recoil reducer, AND,,, a Vais muzzle brake. The beast has been tamed!!
my 6SLR (middle gun in pic) has a Pachmayer pad, Graco reducer, and a Harrell's brake.
My 300WSM (bottom gun in pic) has a Pachmayer pad, Edwards MAX reducer, and Harrell's brake.
The components seem to work in harmony together and my old body loves the results.
;)

What I am about to say about recoil reducers may be outside of what everybody else thinks of them. My opinion about them is that any weight added to the gun that is equal to the weight of a particular recoil reducer works just as well. I shot competitive ATA Trap for about 30 years. I have used Edwards, Beartrap, C&H and other mercury filled recoil reducers. I have also made some out of a 3/4" piece of tubing with lead shot melted in it. To me they all gave about the same results
To slow down the rearward movement of the gun when the round is fired, you must make it heavier or reduce the weight of the projectile and/or the velocity at which it leaves the barrel.
Kick-eez and Pachmeyer Decelerator pads made from sorbathane seem to take the punch out of recoil. A stock with the proper pitch, cast and length will make a huge difference in recoil.

I am not a NASA rocket scientist, nor did I play one on TV. However, I believe there is more to the reduction of recoil using mercury than adding weight to the gun. Just my opinion. Maybe one of our resident engineers can help us out with this.

From the Graco website: "Mercury is used in these units because of its natural ability to absorb and dampen shock. Results are less fatigue, better concentration, higher scores, and comfort-able shooting."
