Recoil Pad

I like Kick-Eez brand pads along with mercury recoil reducers installed in the butt of the stock.

What weight are you using and for what caliber? I'm debating the use of one on my next build.
TIA, Hog

Hog,

The last rifle that I did the Kick-Eez pad and the mercury recoil reducers (2 in the butt of the stock) was a .458 Win mag. I don't own any more of the big thumpers now. I have turned into a wuss in my retirement years ;-)

Nope. Take a look at the Gooey Pad by Trapdude. The 1 1/4" pads are made from surgical silicone. They hold up forever and reduce recoil like nothing else. They also have 1" and 3/4" pads but if you are going to a big caliber, use the 1 1/4".

For heavy recoil, might consider using in combination with a Kick-eez recoil pad, the "Ken Rucker's Auto-Buster Recoil Reduction System", stock #100-004-743AN in the Brownells catalogue. It uses visible compression springs (two) to dampen recoil, and offers 3 spring sets with varying tensions. On a .300 WSM using 230's, the middle spring set will make you think that you are shooting a Win .284! Only drawback I've found is that if you have kids/grand kids, they keep wanting to use the rifle as a pogo-stick.

I put a Limbsaver pad on my Rem 870 Super Mag 3 1/2 " shotgun. It had one just like the Pachmeyer from the factory but the Limbsaver really is much better. I have never shot a rifle that kicks as hard as this 870 when shooting 3 1/2" turkey loads with a .665 turkey choke. The heaviest recoiling rifle I have ever shot is a 458 Win mag shooting 500 gr bullets and it was mild compared this shotgun. ;D

Graco makes a spring dampener and a mercury tube, never tried ether but worth a look.
