Recoil management on bench

Any tips for this with big magnums? I find that after each shot with a .338 or .50 the rear bag has jumped to the right and obviously this is a problem for consistency. It’s less of a problem when shooting prone, where my whole body can absorb the recoil force.

It’s definitely me. Since the stock is on my shoulder, the recoil generates an asymmetric force on my torso, which then generates movement to the right. My question is how to mitigate this.

50 caliber and 338 what? Mitigation would be different depending on how the rifle was built. My 358 Norma has a heavy stock, recoil reducers in the stock and pad. A decent bag seems to work fine. My 8MM JS Mauser is fine in the field but from a bench recoil mitigation would require it to be restocked.

338 Lapua magnum. But even with a 7mm SAUM without the brake, it’s enough to move the rear bag (this is a Protektor with heavy sand).

experiment with where the front of the stock sits in the front bag. Try the stock further back in the front bag and further forward in the front bag.

I mitigate the movement of unbraked sporter weight rifles in larger calibers on the bench by holding them down hard on the rest. Still, it does upset the rear bag.

I usually have the rear bag on a spacer, and at least am able to keep the rear bag on the spacer by putting a sheet of rubber on the top of the spacer.

Regardless, they do move around a lot and I cannot quickly shoot a group. Though I get decent accuracy shooting them this way.

The 7 SAUM and 50 BMG are both in chassis (ARC Xylo and XLR). I'm going to try recording some video next time and see if I can see any issues.
