RECOIL LUG

I changed the barrel and recoil lug on my savage LRPV, and wound up with a setup that doesn't shoot nearly as well as the stock set setup. used a torque wrench on the action bolts and scope bases and rings, so it's set up the same way as the stock LRPV.the scope is the same one that came off shooting..Leupold vx3 6-20. so the question it how snug is this recoil lug supposed to fit in the lug well ? the new lug is oversize compaired to the savage. the lug came from Northland supply and the stock is the h-s from savage. what i'm trying to do is rule out one thing at a time. i didn't have to force the lug in the well , but i can feel a slight drag back and front on the lug when i put it in the stock. i didn't think it bottoms out, but i'll measure today.

Before torquing any of the actions screws, with them (all 3 ) in place, are you taping the butt of the rifle against the floor? This will place the recoil lug in position, and then torque the action screws. The fact that the lug fits tightly is certainly different than the lug from Savage which in the LRPV HS stock does not fit snugly or even close. If you just place the barreled action in the stock with NO action screws is there any for and aft movement? There is in the stock set up so this would be an area of 'change' and it would be where I would look first.
I just reread your question and I see you clearly stated there was also a barrel change. My answer to you is of some interest but that barrel change really would be the first open question...the recoil lug pales in comparison. I'll post this answer anyway as it may be of use to someone.

If you have changed the recoil lug and barrel, please tell us exactly what brand of barrel etc,is it free floated? Is the lug actually touching the bedding block? If it isnt,it is time to bed the lug and skim coat the aluminum at the same time. Thsi will eliminate the bad fit.I have many HS stocks and I have had to rework them all slightly for a good fit.

yes..i tapped the butt on the floor to seat the action. no action movement without the screws .what i'm trying to do is rule out one thing at a time, before i blame the barrel. I've shot the new barrel with a load that was the best in the savage barrel..2 thru i jagged hole ..then 3 above that hole spaced across the top of the 1st hole about a 1/4' high and about 1/4" apart

Let's back up one more step.

Is the new recoil lug properly faced to the action?

Is the new recoil lug action nut properly torqued?

IS the recoil lug free floating now?

Is the barrel free floating now?

If these are yes, than the lug needs to to bedded on the rear only with the action screws all properly torqued.

Once properly bedded, you may have to rezero the scope.

Are you using the same loads you used for the old barrel, and expecting them to shoot just as good or better in the new barrel? Each barrel will probably have a different "favorite" load/bullet combo.

Here's where I should have started:

1.Is the new barrel the same calibre as the old one?
2. Is the new barrel the same make?

LRPV's are offered in 4 different calibres with a twist choice for 3 of them.

There is no reason to assume that the same make, calibre, and twist will shoot the same as another. In fact there is every reason to assume they probably won't shoot identical. placek59 is 100% correct.

(The grouping you described sounds like a 22-250...I just mention that in awaiting your answer to the calibre)

Having a new barrel is the same as having a new rifle. You have to see what works and what doesn't The only advantage in having the same calibre is you don't have to buy brass.

m=61 ..22-250.. the barrel is a new aftermarket pre chamber in 9tw,,i can slide a business card all the way down the barrel..it free floats..the lug and nut are on properly..free float the lug ? ? that i don't understand how..no it's not glass bedded..it shot great w/ the savage barrel with no glass bedding..torqued to 65" lbs.

I'd bet the recoil lug is pinched. The ones from Jim are very big compared to factory in thickness and lenght. More then likely it is bottomed out and the action is in a bind.

Just thinking out loud. If the lug is longer would that not cause the action to be pulled down in the back putting pressure on the tang which is a known problem causing accuracy issues with the Savage action? Dang, that's a long sentence! ;D

Glue the barrel nut together with the barrel with Loctite 270 or good epoxy. Than it`s much easier to change the barrel and more accurate.

thanks for the replays...sorry about the slow responce, but a had a rare gout flair up ..last night air hurt..now a little better...i am going to look at opening up the recoil lug well or buy a savage target action lug..i agree with Dgg6mm..the new lug is much bigger than the stock one and i think that's the problem..i purposely didn't mention the barrel maker..as i don't think it's the barrel

Pred pack will clear Gout attacks darn near immediately! I am on Allipurinol to prevent. Purines(Protein) is not your freind! I am not a MD but did stay at a.......

thanks for the reply... i.m taking indocin 25mg..i live on the ES of Md...summer time is crabs and beer..soft shell crab sandwich w/ 3 nattybo's..and all hell broke loose..i haven't had a gout attack in 2 yrs..i guess the crabs & beer pushed me over the edge..

+1 for the Allipurinol. Haven't had an attack in years. A good medium rare rib eye use to cause my foot a lot of trouble.

I would go back to the factory lug and barrel. Make a quick confirmation it is back to the "before" status. Then use the factory lug with the new barrel. Or/and, use the new lug with the factory barrel.

The solution is probably, bed the lug and work up a new load for the new barrel.

Best Regards......Eagle Six

The front, sides and bottom of the lug should not touch nor should the barrel nut or barrel, thats just the way I do it.

BTW use Jims recoil lug much better than savages lug.
