Recoil lug?

Brownell's has Holland, Tubb, and T/S lugs specifically for Remingtons, also a couple for Savage. I re-use the Remingtons mostly; they allow me to keep the tenon a little shorter, but they are all over the place on thickness.

On hunting rifles, where weight is a factor, I use Rem lugs that have been surface ground. On match rifles and Live Varmint rifles I use Tubbs.

First let me say that I have several rifles that were built using the Tubb recoil lug. It's a fine product. I like them and I'm sure I'll use them again. But it's a thick lug, probably a bit much for most builds.

I think that most folks go a little overboard when it comes to thicker recoil lugs. The most important thing is that the recoil lug be perfectly flat for at least two reasons. One is that you don't want to throw away the money you just spent on an action truing job and a custom barrel by installing an uneven lug between the two. Also, you don't want to experience what happens when a bedding job locks the barreled action into the stock due to an uneven recoil lug that happens to be thicker on the bottom and thinner towards the top.

I use 1/4" stainless tapered lugs made by Pacific Tool & Gauge or one of their subsidiaries. If you buy them by the 100, they are pretty reasonable.
