Recoil Lug Thickness?

Hi guys,

I'm about to swap a 6BR barrel onto my Savage Model 11 .204. I need to order a new recoil lug (machined) to put on while i've got the barrel off, and was wondering what difference the thickness of the lug makes.... In case it matters, my desired use would be long range, 600-1000 but will largely be within 300 yards.

Recently I changed out a barrel on my savage mdl 12. So I installed a new after market .250" recoil lug. My groups were really awful. Problem was the additional thickness moved the nut forward and was creating a pressure point (barrel no longer free floating). I removed enought wood to free float and rifle now shoots great again. pdog2225

I've been told by a couple good smiths now that recoil lug thickness does little or nothing. Just make sure the lug is flat and true.

The standard aftermarket small shank "machined" lug for a Sav is .245"

The biggest difference is the ability to headspace the barrel properly with anything thicker than that. Usually theres not enough threads on a standard threading job to go past .245" by much.

Obviously you could have more threads installed. I would'nt bother though. .245" is just fine.
Proper bedding of this new lug will show much more improvement than adding extra thickness to it.
