Rechambering and Barrel Length

I wish to build a 6mmBR rifle on a Howa action, but the actions come with a barrel. In one case, with a 243 Winchester barrel. While I know the barrel is not a custom barrel, is it possible to rechamber the existing 243 Howa barrel into a 6mmBR? How much barrel length might I lose if such a thing were attempted? I am not normally cheap, but being out of work can force some hard decisions, that I hope to remedy (custom barrel and chambering) when I am working. I just really want to shoot the 6mmBR asap.

you can an it is possible..but NOT advisable .. you will loose approx.1-1/2"
the cost of the project could cost near 300 or more... to take off the barrel cut it re-thread it rechamber an re crown it.. plus the cost of the reamer.. if your smith uses a rented reamer it mite be cheaper unless they charge to re sharpen same...
it be better to buy a new barrel insure life an accuracy or buy a used firearm in 6BR... best is make a switch barrel gun... your barrel may have a resale value to cut costs if that doesn't strike you
one Big advantage is for how many barrels you add to that receiver you save in the same stock same trigger sane scope .. mount an rings
just some food for thought

Save $ or trade for a custom barrel then chamber to 6BR, The accuracy improvement alone will be worth it . Why spend the money twice if your after the best possible accuracy. What about checking around for a lightly used custom barrel ?

Unless your barrel is a straight no taper, you'll not have enough shank room to rechamber to the 6br....
