Rechambering a 243 Win. to a CM (Comp. Match)

I picked up a AI AE MKIII the other day in a chambered 243win. and this thing will shoot any load with 115 Dtacs and H4350. The accuracy is truly amazing I can get her to run .2 all day and have shot it in .1s . The question is I know the that a 243win will eat a barrel pretty fast ,so i was wondering if I to send it out and have a smith run a 6 Competition Match reamer in it would it require cutting off the current chamber and rethread and chamber or could he just push the shoulder forward without rethreading the tenon. The most important question is will it retain its accuracy or is it a possibility I lose it. just want a great barrel last forever haha. Its has 173 rds thru it .

Are you looking for accuracy or long barrel life? If you want accuracy, keep what you have and use the money you would have used to rechamber and new dies towards a new barrel.

Now, if barrel life is what matters, I suggest you build a 30BR or something along those lines. ;)

KISS! You will eat up the difference in barrel life working up a new load.

Thank for the reply and opinion probably shoot the heck out it . How about rechambering accuracy ,will a barrel shoot the the same or will there be a issue . basically will a great barrel shoot great after you cut a chamber of and rechamber.

Erik thanks for your contribution and great write up on your load development process.Love this site for great info and opinions , it offers great support for a wide variety of people in the shooting community .

Barrel harmonics play a big role in accuracy. You can take a great shooting barrel, and because it will be shorter after re chambering, might not shoot as well as before. Usually they will shoot fine after being rechambered, but why risk it?

Thanks for the kind words.

I'd probably be looked at funny with a black AI with a atlas bipod and and rear sand bag. Probably need a better rest and and a special bag fitted for the rear.

Eddie have you set back or rechambered a barrel and it continued to shoot well.
That's answer I was inquiring about . I'll continue to shoot as a .243 I was just wanting to get as many rounds out of a good barrel .

Just a note, you can set a barrel back without cutting the whole chamber off. It depends on how much you feel you need to get past the worn out throat.
I have been around BR for many years and have shot with probably a 1000 shooters. I have shot all over the USA and at all the big shoots. You have the most exceptional 243 that I have ever seen or heard of!

Thanks butch she really is a very accurate rifle . I also have a 6xc that Alan Warner built for me and a 6br that Gre-tan built for me and this AI really shoots light out that's why I had the question about rechambering a great barrel. The barrel on the AI is a benchmark 1&7.7 and like the 115 non coated dtacs. I wasn't trying to brag or boast just wanted to keep her alive and thought a 243 competition match reamer could push the shoulder forward and fire form the 243 brass that I do have and get more life out of her.

g.ross, you got real good advice here from folks you can trust. Call David Bruno, he's been chambering Joe Hendricks 6CMs since the inception.

There is a saying that is very appropriate to your situation "If it works don't fix it!".

Why would anyone want to risk rechambering a gun that shoots as well as you claim is beyond me.
