Rechamber 6x47?

I've got a 6x47 barrel off of a friend's rifle. I'd like to try my hand at a rechamber. I want to do this by hand with a finish reamer. My hope is to chamber to 243 but I'm not sure of the difference between body diameters.

I've rebarrelled several Savages so I do understand how to headspace a bolt action. I'm just unsure if this project is too much for hand tools.

I think you will need to take a lot of metal off to go from 6x47 to 243WIN......too much to do by hand and get good results IMHO. But, that's just my .02.

That's my fear. It's almost .4" by my measuring. Is there another cartridge, longer than 6x47, I might look into?

.243 AI, 6mm Rem. AI or 6-284. But hand reaming to another caliber is not advisable. The new reamer has nothing to pilot it until the job is mostly done, so the BEST is can do is follow the old chamber. Therefore it will never be more on center of the rifling than the old chamber was; quite often it doesn't follow the old chamber precisely. The best chance one has to do this is by using a lathe and a floating reamer holder where the pressure is directly towards the center of the chamber. Without a pilot guiding the reamer, you would most certainly wallow out the chamber. Best to either stick with what you have or have someone with lathe do it for you.

Don't forget , headspace is one thing but the amount of the case that sticks out off the barrel is more important . I say more because you can set headspace with gauges but still have more than whats safe of the case sticking out of the barrel . I usually like .005-.010 more than the boltface recess. That should give you .005-.010 clearance between the bolt nose and barrel .
I do think it is to much to accurately do by hand , I see a lathe in your future .

I did a lot of measuring and ordered a different recoil lug. The feel of the bolt closing is right. I'm sure there is a better way to measure the clearance between the bolt and barrel, but I don't know it.

I have access to a lathe, it's just not at my home. Sounds like my best bet will be to chuck it up and run the reamer that way. I do want it to be straight. I am leeaning towards 243AI now because the body is larger than 6x47 so it will cut a mostly new chamber.

To measure the bolt - barrel clearance , go to a parts auto store and ask for some " plasti - gauge " about $4 . It's easy and accurate . Or you can always use clay .
